i started this simply to tell you the pride i have in owning a desert dagger , government agent , seal pup and mini pentagon. tomorrow i am buying an aluminium handled flash 2. i have over 100 functional knives in my collection! my desert dagger is a functional work of art in my opinion. i am a firm believer in having a daily carry knife , which will be my falsh 2 once i get it. i live in perth , western australia howver, and the knife laws are ludicrous. no double deged , automatic or butterfly knives are allowed. charges are laid for "carrying a concealed weapon" "going armed in public" "carrying a controlled weapon" ! i resist using my knives on people due to the fact that i don`t want to lose them all. i just wanted to say that i am mightily impressed with every single sog knife i have ever bought and know that if i ever have to , i can depend on my sog knife. future aims for my collection : trident fixed blade , trident folder. i don`t understand , we can`t have autos but we can have S.A.T knives . whats the difference between pushing a button to activate the blade , and pushing the blade a little? so thankyou sog , for giving australia a legal switch blade.

It's just the way US Federal law is written. Pushing a button on the handle of a spring blade is illegal. Spring blades that open by a method other than pressing a button in the handle is OK. If I remember correctly, the Switchblade law was written back in the 1950's, over three full decades (very likely many more by 5-10 years) before the assisted knives hit the market. It will take new legislation to cover other spring operated blades.

for giving australia a legal switch blade.
Are you buying the Flash II in Perth or buying offshore?
I have heard many stories of assisted opening knives being conviscated by our customs, they are deemed flick knives and thus illegal. This has stopped me from buying these type of folders from my usual US suppliers and I haven't seen them in any of our second rate knife shops here in WA.

the place i am buying it from already has it in stock. thnaks for the comments. i`m going to get it on saturday. i hate fantasy knives why pay $200+ for something that just sits on a shelf? i`m amazed the store i`m getting it from manged to import it all. same as they get supposedly illegal to import double edged knives . i am in perth western australia, and over here a sog bowie is $475 , same as a sog trident . the seal 2000 is $230aud , even a mini pentagon is $90 . when i get the flash 2 aluminium handle , it will cost me $160 aussie dollars! bcount yourself lucky as these knives in america are half to a third of th

sorry the knives are half the price in america . mate if your in perth just go to wellington surplus. but leave me a flash to buy ay.

SIRGALANT, Wellington surplus is probably the best of a bad bunch of cuttlery shops - I know it well as I live in the city about 5 minutes walk from there. They do have a reasonable range of SOG's, but their prices are absurd and most of their stock is old. I purchase all my tools from online shops - New Graham are excellent, can place an order with them and receive the goods within 7 days and the price is less than half what you would pay here - just have customs to deal with.
Confession to this forum - I don't have a SOG in my rotation, will have to keep a closer eye on these in the future.
New Pig Hunter - thanks for the email, will keep this in mind if/when something takes my fancy.

Hello, if they have old stock, you should consider looking at some of the older models from SOG. Many of these older models are becoming hard to find and prices seem to be going up if you do locate any. An example would be cocobola handled SOGs or carbon fiber handles, liner locks have been discontinued for a while.
Man I wouild love to look at some of these, and it also seems to me that if they have old stock, a person could make an offer to the owner, they might just want to get rid of some of these older knives a little cheaper and make room for new stock, just a thought.

P.S. Why are they priced so high ?

G'day Robbie, The prices are high probably due to the slow turnaround of stock. The slow turnaround is probably due to the prices being too high. A nice catch 22. Retailers here in Perth put about a 200% markup on most of their product and rely on impulsive uninformed shoppers to make a profit.
I will have a good look at the SOG display next time I'm at this shop and get a better feel for the SOG products and the stores attitude towards some aggressive bargaining - The carbon fiber handled models sounds attractive.
What SOG do you suggest in a 3 to 4" blade sturdy EDC type folder? Is there a standout SOG product that everyone should own?

i am not an uninformed shopper , but this way i DEFINITELY get the knife i want. trying to bargain with wellington surplus never gets you anywhere i have found. as you said , the flash 2 is EXTREMELY hrad to get past customs , so thats why i`m paying the absurd prcie for it. they better still have an aluminium handled one in stock when i get there tomorrow. also , how often do you get to purchase a S.A.T knive in oz/ i don`t even know of anyonther stores that carry them. and yes knives are like evrything else they only cost so much bcoz of the middleman. i can`t decide between serations or plain blade?

here's an idea..... if you order from offshore, how about telling the sender to put it in a simple plain cardboard box with no markings, and write on the outside, "Birthday Present."

perhaps that keep customs from looking inside ??

the idea is to make the box look like a normal box.....

Cheers,

Carl

its ok i just bought a flash 2 with graphite? hamdle. 150 bucks. next week i will buy the trident folder , which is oly 125 bucks.has anyone put a flash 2 to some hard use? how strong is the S.A.T mechanism? will playing with it constantlly wreck it? how about edge retention? i`m mostly worried about breaking the S.A.T mechanism in it. the trdient folder looks really cool, but i was 25 bucks short after buying the flash 2. :(

Sir, you won't break it, at least I don't see how, my sons and I have about 7 or 8 between us, opened I am sure thousands of times, no problems at all. Blade steel is great, sharp as a razor and stays well but if you dull it it resharpens fairly easy with a good stone.

Fire that thing until your thumb gets sore ! :D No sweat ! I love mine and honestly have opened it way up in the thousands, still tight and works great.
Robbie Roberson ;)

P.S. I can honestly say I have never heard of an assisted breaking, except for a few bent clips after they hung on something solid and bent them. :D

yeah , thats reassuring , however i have the model with the graphite handle? being a collector i mostly play with my knives , so i could spen hours just flicking it in and out. howver i`ll take your word 4 it. i`m happoy with my purchase, except for the fact that its cutting edge is only sharpened on one side. what do you guys think of muela knives? do you reckon they are seriously useable practical knives?

Flick that thing :D you will love it.......and after you have flicked it a couple hundred times, add a few drops of light weight oil and flick it another couple hundred, it will just get smoother and faster.

I don't own a Muela, but have looked at pics, I like the looks of the stag handled ones.
