I have aquired a metal library card catalog cabinet. I need to line the drawers with something so the bottom of the drawer is flat. Looking for suggestions that won't react in a bad way with knives of varying materials.

Wood veneer will work well. Plastic or foam drawer liners will stick to the knives. Felt attracts dermestid larvae.

If you want something soft neoprene works. If you get it unfinished on one side you have the option of slick or nonskid

Is one type of wood better than another? I was looking at peg board. I didn't know if this material would soak in moisture or if the holes in it would help with circulation. Would the neoprene hold moisture? I would like something that would be gentle. It would seem if you look at a swiss army knife scale it scratches... Thank you Bill and Dan.

Any materials that would be good that also would not be hurt by mineral oil the knives may have on them?

My first thought was a decent quality shelf liner. Many are machine washable and they provide some cushion and shouldn't scratch any materials. They are pretty cheap and easy to cut to size. I'd suggest non-adhesive so you can wash them and clean out the bottom if needed.
