Okay, here's the scenario. Ever see the movie, The Edge? Plane goes down. You survive. You reach in your pockets and all you have with you is a folding knife, a compass, and a fire starter.

Show me or tell me what your "pocket set" of these three essentials would be!

Hell of a lucky combo to be what you "only have with you."
I'd have a Spyderco Military (chances are I'd have it with me, since it's always in my pocket), just about any compass, and a ferro rod (or one of those magnesium blocks with the rod embedded in one side).

Then again, thinking about it (and I've never seen the movie), this must've been a small, private plane. 'Cause how else would you get on a plane with a knife and/or fire-starting implement?

hopefully it would be
Strider SMF
magnesium starter (doesnt matter, im good at the bow drill if i have to use it)
any compass that works. lol

Thats a pretty good movie for the record. :)

Silva Ranger, Crawford One Hand Folder, Magnisium Fire Starter(and lately I've been messin' around with a fire piston).

puukko,

Do yourself a favor and go rent the movie right now. Oh, and yes, they were traveling in a small private bush plane.

Which piston do you have? I've been looking at the ones from firepiston.com but theyre a little pricy.

I bought this one click me on Ebay to start with, it took me about 1/2 an hour till I could get it lit every shot.

In a smaller package(like some of the other more expensive ones available, up to $50) I think it would be the item to keep in a BOB but right now my set up is in a big Folgers Plastic Coffee Can.

I would have my trusty Spyderco Manix of course. My swedish Fire steel, and finally my suunto MC-2. But really and compass or fire starting method would do.

Hmm if I would have been on the plane I would have had a complete survival kit in a fanny pack or something attached to me and a Ritter PSK but if I was stuck with just those three a Vic Swisstool, a Magfire pro firesteel and a wrist compass

Umm, commercial flights don't lat you carry anything anymore!

A CRK hollow handled FB like a Mountaineer, a hunk of magnesium and any compass that works. A map and a ballpark idea of where I am would be handy too.

It's that good, eh? Cool, I'll check it out. How long ago was it produced, and who's in it?

Psst! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119051/  Check out the trailer.

Oh, and as for what would be in my pocket:
compass NATO survival compass
Then I guess whatever my edc was that day, plus either a zippo or a mini bic.
I'd most likely have other/better stuff in my pack, but that's my back-up-in-my-pocket survival kit when I hit the woods.

most likely my edc: crkt m21
my firesteel
and signalling mirror.

I also hope I had run my clothes through the dryer first before this happened. if I was to crash land somewhere cold or some what wet i'd pull as much dryer lint out of my pockets as possible. also i'd pull the fluffy stuff off my socks and strike a spark to it. hopefully someone might see the smoke and pick me up =). also i'd try to pull as much off the plane as I can. strip the seats for fabric and thread what ever cordage or wiring I can find into it to make a bag. use the foam from the seats as insulation by stuffing it into my jacket. break off a few shards of glass and wrap them with what ever I can find in the hopes of prolonging the length of my blade. and hopefully a long piece of metal which can act as a walking stick, fishing pole, spear, or self defence against wild animals. I would break apart the guages and pull the dials out and use them as fish hooks. pull as much wiring out as I can from the wreckage which can serve as snaring lines. if the wheels are still intact i'd try to pull the rubber off and use it for making signal fires. any ball bearings I can find I could cut a notch into them and use them as sinkers for my fishing line. if the area that I am in has a lot of snow, perhaps I could strip the aluminum sheeting off the wings and make some makeshift snowshoes to help me travel. the props off the front of the plane can serve as cutting tools. oh... compas I'm sure I could rip it off the dash/cockpit of the plane. if I was injured I could pull off some more fabric and use it as bandages or wrapping for a splint. if I could find some kind of water proof container I would try to put some gasoline into it because it'd help in starting my fires. also if there was some kind of mesh material I could turn it into a bag and place large chunks of snow into it and place it near a fire over a cup which would melt the snow for water.

think I pretty much covered it. I'm sure someone else will think of other resourceful things that can be done with the wreckage.

cheers ^^

Unfortunately, in the movie scenario, the plane crashes in a lake and sinks to the bottom. :(

dang I guess I better go rent it and take a look for me self =)

did he/she eject from the plane??

hmm... parachute???? =)
paracord bundled up and in pockets. strips of silk for bandages, wrapping, melting snow, etc...

if its a scenario where I'm only with those three things... (m21, firesteel, signal mirror).. after drying myself off with a fire, i'd try walk around the lake and look for a decent sized rock. pick it up and carry it to some higher ground and drop/smash it in the hopes that the resulting effects would be shards of rocks left. wrap these with whatever I can find and use these over my knife (would use my knife only when necessary). next i'd look around for a decent place to crawl into.. I.e. caves, hollows, tree wells, etc... and sit down and try to assess my situation without freaking out... one of the things I do when I'm out in the woods is just sit down, close my eyes, and just smell the air. take in a few and sometimes u'd be amazed what u can smell... a few of the times I could smell something burning or even cooking.. like tucan sam said "follow your nose"... also closing your eyes lets you listen more... you might be able to hear running water in which case its possible to find a stream or river. I like to stick my streams for two reasons. most of the time it leads to trails or people (even old logging roads). second I always have a fresh supply of water nearby.. also it prevents you from walking around in circles. if I DID have to leave the stream/river I would break or twist a branch every once in a while into a non-natural position, marking where i've been. boggy areas have lots of mosquitos. I'm hoping I'm wearing a jacket and if that's the case (and if its not to cold), I could take my shirt off, cut eye holes into it and wrap it around my head in the hopes that it'll prevent mosquito bites.... trying to survive and being irritated at the same time sucks. once in a while i'd pick up a few rocks and throw it into each direction NWSE because believe it or not, rescue is sometimes a stones throw away, pending u don't hit ur rescuer in the back of the head =). any natural foods I can find and stuff in to my pockets are always welcome. other then that I guess i'd build makeshift shelters along the way and make sure when I leave to make an arrow pointing in the direction I travelled. hopefully someone more well prepared then me will follow it and find me curled up in the fetal position under one of my shelters and give me some FOOD ^^...

cheers ^^

I thinking my set would be a Victorinox Farmer or Camper. I think the woodsaw would be invaluable in that situation.

Compass and fire - one of these with matches and a Hot Spark inside: http://www.kmmatchcase.com/
