Knife Decision Help

I am looking for a large knife to give as a gift to a friend. I have narrowed my choices down to:

Kershaw Outcast Camp Knife
Becker BK9
SOG Tigershark
Ontario RTAK2

Anyone have any Pros or Cons on these knives? Or good reasons to pick one over the other?

Becker BK9 or the Outcast I'd say. The RTAK has all that dirt between RAT and Ontario attributed to it. SOG Tigershark isn't what it used to be and the rasps and serrations (not to mention the guard even though its removeable) aren't conducive to the design. I think the BK9 is a better knife, probably more useful too but that's just my impression. The BK9 has an outstanding warranty and comes from a great company as well (not to say that Kershaw isn't great).

only thing bout beckers is the coating seems to wear quickly if you baton with it. but I say the outcast or the bk9

Of the 4 knives mentioned, I have the Outcast and the BK9. I prefer the BK9 over the Outcast...Why? Had problem with the edge chipping on the Outcast. Guess the D2 is just a little too brittle.

I'm a huge fan of the BKT line of knives. I have yet to handle one of the new Kabar productions, but you can't go wrong with a Becker design for dependability. I carried a BK-7 during my first deployment to Iraq and loved it.

Murph

I like the Outcast and the BK-9. I have the BK-2 Campanion and am ordering the KaBar Large Heavy Bowie for my "camping" and "survival" needs - another one you may want to consider. 9" long, .236" thick, 1095 steel blade. Plus, it has a wide, full flat grind. And it is less expensive @ ~$48.

Id go the rtak2.
untill rat step up to the plate they have nuthin in this catergory
cant go wrong with a cold steel trailmaster either

these are the only ones i've owned and used (and abused)

good luck.

Thanks for the replys everyone! It looks like an Outcast or a BK9 is in my future. I am leaning more towards the Outcast as I like the lighter weight.

BK9. The Outcast is way too brittle and a pain to resharpen due to the recurve and D2.

I go with what Jake said. I had an Outcast, and while it is a nice knife I never could get adjusted to the handle as it felt too small. The BK9 is another I've had and I really liked it. Something else to look at that is not in your list, and you may have already "tossed" it out, but that would be the Ontario Ranger series. These are made exactly as Justin of Ranger Knives makes them. The RD9 would be comparable to the BK9, except the RD's all have a clip point, which is what sold me. I have a RD4 and a RD7, and both are great feeling knives.

Becker.

(Or like cutter said...Ranger!)

Both bombproof, last a lifetime, no nonsense, no hype, sensibly priced knives made by incredibly stand up guys.
