Knife decision on EDC

Looking for some info on some Knives guys. I'm not a knife guru so I need some advice. I'm looking for a nice folder for EDC. I read a article about the new SOGs with the VG-10 steel. They seem to really admire the knives and they blade steel. I'm thinking of getting the SOG X-ray or Vulcan. Since I'm not knowledgeable on knives, I was wondering if there was a better knife for that price range that is similar to those, or were these not all they were cracked up to be. Right now, I'm leaning toward the Vulcan.

SOG doesn't make a bad knife, but I would be more gravitated towards something from another manufacturer such as Spyderco or Benchmade.

The VG-10 stainless is a great steel, and I'm sure that the SOG knives would make you very happy. I have a number of SOGs in my collection, but at the end of the day my BMs and Spydercos are the ones that end up in my pocket. In that price range, there are several EDC staples of the knife industry---the Spyderco Military, the Benchmade 710D2, and the Benchmade/Doug Ritter RSK Mk1. All of these are, in my opinion, of higher quality. I really enjoy carrying these on a daily basis. They offer great lock strength, ergonomics, and great blade steel.

If you're worried about undue corrosion, the 710D2 is made from D2 tool steel, which is not stainless, so you might want to stick with the other two, which are made from S30V stainless that offers great toughness and edge retention. I have yet to have S30V chip or roll on me.

All three are made in the United States of America, whereas SOGs are generally made in Asian countries---VG10 models are made in Japan.

At the end of the day, I'm sure that SOG would provide a quality knife. I'm just a diehard Spyderco and Benchmade kind of guy when in the realm of production folders.

Good luck, and have a merry Christmas! :)

Well I would recommend you look at 3 major companies for your first nice affordable EDC knife.

Spyderco, Benchmade, and Kershaw
You might be interested in benchmade's mini-griptilian, spyderco's delica, or kershaw's RAM.

Good luck and welcome to Blade Forums

(was typing same time as steelscout and didn't see his post, agree 100% with you)

The other folks told you good stuff. We could get more specific with suggestions if you told us a bit more about your usage.

- What kinds of jobs do you expect your EDC to perform? Is this more of a city knife or a country/camping knife? Is this a duty knife?
- How big a knife do you feel comfortable carrying or how big is legal to carry in your area?
- Are you set on a one-hand opener or would you think about a traditional style?
- At what price range are you looking?

More info means better answers

Benchmade 550 if you like a hole opener or 551 if you like a thumb stud. Can be found for under $75 NIB on Ebay. Or Benchmade 14205 which is a HK branded knife. It is a real quality folder for around $120. The 14205 is one of the best folder Benchmade makes for fit and finish.

for a 120.00 you can get a bm skirmish 635 or a doug ritter gripper for cheeper look here on the forum exchange al kinds of good deals if you can take your time for around 50 to 60 you can find a lg bm gripper in 154cm feels good in the hand has a great lock up for leftys or right handers

Take a look at the Benchmade 940 series. Very nice and very smooth. Also a Spyderco Police 3 if you want something a little bigger. Good Luck! Kevin :D

Officer, you might look at the 5.11 line at New Graham.

These are well built knives that should serve you well as a duty knife and general use knife, though they are not shaped for skinning. They are a pretty affordable for what you get, as well.

There is a current thread on the First Responder. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=607166
There have been a couple of threads on the Investigator as well. Nice thing about the Investigator is the 154CM steel. Very good for someone new to knives as it is easier to sharpen than S30V, though S30V is very good steel.
All the posts by folks who have bought these have been very positive.

Thanks for your work. Be safe.
