anyone have any experience taking down a boker gnome or any other boker knife with those hollow plugs holding the handle scales on?
I want to take off the handles, put in a toxic green liner, and stonewash the blade but I am not sure how to approach take down on it.

I want to take my boker gnomes handle scales off. does anyone have experience disassembling knives which are held together by those hollow handle plug thingies? (I don't know the name for them)

I have another thread dedicated to this on the boker page.

thanks

Don't Do It!!,

Kidding! ;)

Generally referred to as thong hole tubing. The only way to remove them is to press it or drill it out. Reson being is that the knife is not designed for removeqble scales and they are added with some permanence in mind.

I believe he is referring to the fixed blade with thong hole tubing. You would need to drill it out, i'm sure someone with more experience will chime in.

Yea, looks like he is looking to knock the pins out.

I have very limited experience with this myself, having only ever done it to much older knives. On those that I have done, I simply hammered a razor blade between the spine and scales to free up any epoxy. Then, using a beater knife, did the same thing to create a gap large enough between them to fit an eyeglasses screwdriver, then just kept stepping up to larger screwdrivers until I felt comfortable enough to start prying.

I have also heard, as ajbuckelew suggested, drilling out the pins, then lightly striking the scales off with a hammer could work.

yeah I like this idea better than drilling them out, I don't want to ruin the plugs, i want to use them when I reassemble it.

I'll post my findings after I give it a shot! (fingers crossed I don't ruin my beautiful little knife!)

If you do try to drill it out make sure you duct tape the blade and clamp it down. Sometimes the bit gets hung up and it will send the blade spinning while removing your fingers from your hand.
