Hopefully this doesn't trigger anyone too severely, but who's got the best (worst?) knife loss/damage/self destruction story? Usually any hobby involving expensive items that fit in your hand or pocket have some good ones.

Maybe not exactly what you're after, but I've got a knife distruction story.

So a month or so ago I bought a Buck 673 small Bucklite max of their web specials page with the intent to rehandle it.
Ordered a piece of American black walnut that was taking forever ( lost in the mail it turns out and had to be resent ) so I decided to try my hand at maybe trying to do a micarta handle for it.
Long story short is that 5mim epoxy which is all that I could get on short notice was not up to the task.

I soaked the fabric in the stuff and wrapped it around the tang of the knife and it just didn't go well, so I had to result to using a small hammer ( a tack hammer with the tines removed ) on the Ozark trail folder I kept on my workbench to get the stuff. off
I broke the knife and had to grab another junk knife and I broke that one too.
So yeah they were cheap crappy knives, but in the end I broke two folders by hammering on them.

The black walnut eventually came in and the rehandle went great btw.

Destroying those was worth it to make this

That's EXACTLY the kind of story I was hoping for. The end result looks fantastic though.

Thanks.
I've been using it at work since finishing it and it's worked out great, the blade has a nice ratio of stock thickness and grind height / blade width allowing it to slice very well.

I think the end result of the broken junk knives is fantastic as well, I'll bet the broken knives and the hacked up fabric and epoxy could be a piece of modern art :D

Pretty sure your art piece is a commentary on the futility of war. Just make a nice sign for it and stick it on MOMA.

I was thinking more of knives self destructing, but thanks for that I guess? Good reminder to watch what I'm cutting towards at least.

When I saw “self destruction” and “damage” I assumed you meant damage to people. I can buy another knife, but new fingers are hard to come by.

Knives don’t often self destruct. Unless they are m390, apparently.
