knife display

Hi,

What a waste of beauty  My most beautiful knifes are hidden in a drawer 99% of their lifetime :thumbdn: :thumbdn: :thumbdn:

I want to make them visually accessible while still storing them safely. Maybe I could put them on the wall next to the fire place - high enough to be out of reach for children - or maybe in a glass front cabinet in the living room for display…. I somehow would like to admire them while having coffee and cake :D I talked to my wife about it but she was rather... let's call it... "skeptical" :o

I urgently need to come up with a good looking concept how to integrate the knife display into our living room set up. Please inspire me with pictures of your solutions.

No Drawers. No Boxes. Free INFI

I went with a bookcase like this, that has glass front doors that slide up and out of the way. We found ours at one of those "ALWAYS GOING OUT OF BUSINESS" furniture stores. It's actually pretty well constructed. I drilled small holes in the back of each shelf and inserted a string of LED lights that provide just enough illumination. Each bookcase probably holds 60 or so knives (of all shapes and sizes).

I also had one custom built case with an acrylic front around three sides and acrylic shelves. The base and back of it are oak. It looks really nice, but the knives seem to skitter around a bit on the acrylic, so that every time I turn around it seems they're all out of their rows (and those of us with OCD know that they HAVE to be in rows :D). The case I got cost about $60 to have custom made and looked something like this, except with a wood base and back. Unfortunately, the guy who builds them seems to have disappeared from the web.

Hope that give you a few ideas.

I have one just like that (slightly different).

http://www.slumberland.com/furniture/Products/Madison-Collection---Lawyers-Bookcase__1750681.aspx

It was on sale for $199 when I purchased it. All oak and oak veneers, made in the USA.

I've got a couple of nice wooden display boxes. Velvet background hides some decent memory foam. So the knives (or guns or whatever) suspend in mid-air. I got them online somewhere and if I wasn't up so late watching the game, I could tell you what they are called and where to get them.

Great, keep 'em coming!

In the cabinet, how do you fix the knives standing upright (edge down/spine up)? I mean, you don't want to put them flat on the ground

Tell you what, we will go in on an order. You take the one up front (beautiful as it is), and I will take that black handled NMFBM stain beauty in the back!

Deal  I'll start negotiations by requesting four dozen acryllic stands (2 for me + 2 for you) to be delivered in Jan. 2011 and being paid in monthly installments until Dec. 2014 - this should position us to ask for the bonus knives to be shipped for free and upfront... I'll keep you updated ;) :D

BTW: I prefer the glass top table. My wife prefers the cabinet. And now guess what will be the final decision

You could try a place that sells used store fixtures and see if they have any decent locking display cases. Just like a gun safe though, go bigger then you think you need....room to grow ya know.:thumbup:

Good luck
