Up until about a year ago, I used to draw and sketch constantly. I started out drawing superheroes etc, but after a while I matured artistically and drew anything and everything I could. I wasn't great, but I wasn't drawing stick figures either. When I used to work for Wally World, putting in 16 hour days, I would make sure I got at least one page in my sketchbook. Now, with just 8 hour days for Uncle Sam, I haven't drawn anything. I've been trying to get back into art, but I don't have much drive for it.
When I used to draw superheroes, in my early teens, I used to draw all kinds of outlandish weapons, ala Al Williamson. Guns, knives, whatever. Looking over my old sketchbooks trying to get some inspiration out of them, I thought about how much design must go into a knife, and how much ideas knifemakers and knife company R&D techs must jot down. That got me to thinking. I'd love to see some artbooks, or online sites, with preliminary knife designs. Any type of artwork, even if it was scrawled on looseleaf paper, or a cocktail napkin. Anybody know if companies or makers keep their designs, or if they even draw their designs before they get started? Maybe even put them on cardboard, or some type of 3D construct to see the shape of the handle or blade? I haven't seen any books or sites that actually have real designs that have been created.
I can understand some companies or makers having trepidations about sharing their designs with the general public, trademark and copyrights really don't matter to companies like Gerber making the EVO for example.
