Knife engravings missing on Buck 110 handle

I recently sent in my dad's Buck 110 knife he recieved back in 79' to have the blade replaced (broken tip and bent). I included in the shipment a letter stating the knife is of sentimental value and not to replace the knife only to repair.

I recieved the knife yesterday (7/12/14). It has a new blade with a great edge. However, the handle is different. The knife had four engravings on the brass sections of the handle. What i would consider the bottom of the knife (the toe?) those engravings are present. But the brass sections on the top of the handle (where the blade pivots open and shut) each had an engraving on each side. The words 'portland, or' on one side and 'coffee cup' (dad's nickname/handle) on the other... engravings are no longer there.

Anyone have any thoughts on what I should do to try and get those pieces of the handle back? I know I need to contact Buck's warrenty department but I'm worried that it probably was put into some bin for recycling and could be gone. Anyone have knowledge pretaining to how the top brass sections of the knife can be replaced without the bottom sections....they apprear to be a single piece. Would there be a reason to have needed to make a swap with new fittings? The paperwork that came back with the knife has the comment no defects.

Thanks in advance for any infomation

My guess is when they put in the new blade and pin it was polished out

+1 on this answer

Especially if the engraving went on the pivot pin. They would have to buff it out for sure.
Perhaps get the missing words engraved again. That shouldn't be too expensive.

Coffeecup,

Call Buck tomorrow, ask for Joe Houser, tell him your situation.

For others, always be sure when you send in a special knife for warranty work. Contact Buck directly ahead of knife mailing. Enclose written instructions in detail with knife. They will do as you instruct.

As you have already noted, the frame & bolsters are a single piece so no frame parts were actually removed and thrown away. The process of replacing the blade involves removal and replacement of the pivot pin which passes thru both sides of the knife and is peened in place. This cannot be done without disrupting the surfaces of the knife. After the new pivot pin is peened in place the bolster surfaces are then ground flush and polished out. That grinding and polishing process would have removed any engraving on the surface. I don't know if it can be done differently. Sorry this didn't work out for you as hoped but it's too late. Having the engraving redone as DesertChris suggests is the simplest best option.

I can not find the reference at the moment but this has been discussed before that customizing a knife, including custom handles, voids the warranty for reasons similar to this this as warranty work usually requires the disassembly of the knife and Buck can't guarantee that the customized work won't be affected. In reading others experiences it does seem that Buck does try very hard to please.
