There are no women folk on the HI forum. There are however women on other forums.

I used to surf every morning of my life at 16h30 and everytime I saw a lady surfer out I would be stoked (as you do) but always at the back of my mind I thought "Go away, you shouldn't be here"

I don't want to make any waves as I have the deepest respect for women but I would like to hear your (my internet buddies) opinions on the subject.

B

youngwood (Shirley) is female, no? I wish there were more females on Bladeforums in general, and the HI forum in particular. It's great to see different opinions. Besides, I'll jabber about knives with pretty much anyone who will listen. If I say one more word about khukuris to my wife I think she'll go insane. I really have to limit my conversations about knives in my non-internet life because I don't know anyone who likes them as much as I do.

youngwood is going to take exception to your statement.:) Very nice lady and starting to get HIKV.

IIRC one or two others have popped up now and again.

Josh, I thought your wife was very understanding at the convention. Asked a lot of interesting questions. You've got a good partner!

lcs37-- My wife is very understanding, but I can try the patience of even the most understanding people:rolleyes:. I am very enthusiastic about khukuris, and I tend to babble on (and on and on) about them. She can only take so much. Don't get me wrong-- I wasn't trying to suggest that my wife is unsupportive of my khukuri habit. She's definitely a keeper. We're coming up on our ten year anniversary this June. I can't imagine life without her.

Do you mean me!?! I/females shouldn't be here? B.but..but I just got here...!

Couldn't I be an internet buddy too!? I have opinions; on occasion -may be interesting or/ not.

As one of the very few (maybe 2?) female cantina members, this is my 2 cents, well 2 cents cdn. anyway.
I'm here, for the concentrated khuk knowledge, considerate advice/discussion/experience in usage, many ot("other things") not the least of which is the quality of the company.
Don't think I missed anything on race, creed, color or sex "not particularly welcome here". Or I doubt, I would be.

Rather my welcome and exchanges received; exemplify the best(in human nature)= from the best, a rare breed these days, imo.

If I've misinterpreted your meaning, I apologise.

No waves taken or intended.

Shirley - no offence meant !!

Every morning when I used to surf there were always just other blokes out there with me and when we did see a lady surfer it was like seeing the elusive mermaid or mystical sea creature.

In the world of knives every woman I have ever spoken to about knives gives me the same reaction "NUTTER", my fiance has come to accept my knives but will never love them like me. When I think of knives it makes me think of days gone by when all a man (or a woman in this case) had was their trusty blade.

I welcome you with open arms and apologise if I have caused offence.

Every special place needs some mysticm and to me woman are the most mystical creatures of all.

:)

Hehehehe...I remember the days when all the "women" on the net were actually guys.:D

*ALMOST* all the girls I've met have looked upon my "obsession" in near-complete revusion and/or feel I'm a psycho, a criminal, or both and I should be locked up!

Gladly, the love-of-my-life, Gwen, *LOVES* Khuks and all bent blades! She'll be a HIKV-er in no time! :D:D:D

am always glad to see women on the board. I think a different perspective is refreshing and valuable. But I think I know what Brendan means when he says women are mystical. I have called my wife "my Amazon" and "my Valkyrie". And I mean them both as a compliment. It's not just her six foot frame but her inner strength that make me think of warrior women from myth and legend. And that's a good thing.

Shirley, you want to watch out for Brendan. He's a Silver Tongued Devil when it comes to the ladies, although he seems easily fooled by his fiance.;)

People are people. Most of the women that frequent bladeforums are as much knifeknuts as anyone else. They have interest, and knowledge and the desire to learn more.

Things do get a little interesting when a siren appears - someone who attracts attention specifically because of their gender. Some do this unconsciously, while others appear to enjoy and welcome the attention. This sort of behavior can get a little cloying with all the swirling testosterone and whatnot, but tends not to be too bad. Just people being people.

So none of the women I've encountered on the forum seem at all out of place, and they contribute as much to the atmosphere as anyone else.

Brendan,

No problem.
Just wondering... in case.. some lady surfer came around and wanted to join. ;)

I forget my being here could be odder to some than to me. As my family seems predisposed to 1 girl in a truckload of boys per generation. The statistics gave me more a feeling of "coming home" rather than fright(!).

Wish I had the slightest bit of mystical female to add but mermaids and such are beyond me-can't swim.

The mysticism to me is in what's going on here. From what the Kamis put into the blades to Uncle to all the lives touched and made better and passed on. Sort of a hub to send forth blades of strength and purpose endowed with spiritual force to do good.
I believe the mystical power behind that unites us in common cause, in our own strengths, in our different parts of the world.

Don't quite know how I got from sea creatures to that.
So I'll just go back to working through the threads on sharpening.
(Gonna take a while as I'm NO good at it.)

Unless you start that "surfer lady" stuff again! :D

Hang in there, Shirley. The mystical and magical - the something felt but not seen - is what grabbed ahold of me in this forum, too!

The sense that the really REAL in Nepal doesn't have to match what seems to be really REAL in the US.

The few times in one's life the fog lifts, or you find yourself in a well known garden but this time it's without the sunglasses you've always worn and it's so vibrant and intense an experience as to remember the rest of your life.

And some khuks feel like they're a part of you. Others don't. Mysticism provides a nominally useful way of accepting what our minds otherwise would object to. But naming or attributing special powers to certain weapons has been accepted as real for as long as such weapons have protected us. From Arthur Pendragon and Excalibur down to me and a khukuri named Surya, Chandra, Tara that fell into my lap ( in english: Sun, Moon, and Stars ). Those who saw it at the convention will remember it.

Besides, let Yvsa take care of Brendan, Shirley. He doesn't have the foggiest idea how to handle NDNs, at least not the Cherokee ones from Indian Territory ( presently known as Oklahoma ).

Surfer lady - it seems we have something in common.

The lack of sharpening skills, I'm sure mine are worse though. My khuk's are like hammers. If I hack something it breaks from sheer force rather than been sliced in two.

Job still gets done and I'm getting better at sharpening so we'll learn together.

:D

All this time I didn't realise Yvsa was in Oklahoma. My sister got a scholarship to study at a university in Oklahoma (not sure which one - will check) so I'll have to send her to say hello when she gets there in August. Good to know there will be good people near to where my little sis is going.

:)

Shirley, See if these work.

I see we've wandered deeply into the cornpone and hogfat. Brendan clearly stated mixed emotions upon seeing women where previously no women dared to tread. It was refreshing of him to say so. There is a loss in not having an exclusive guy place. Men places are good. It is better to have women here, though, because it will make this place we love bigger inside.

There's another thread here in HI that has entrenched itself overhead into canned celestial artificial whipped topping. That's the ying yang curved blade but strong thread. Making the truth sound anything but pompous or silly is hard to do. I think we need more practise. Next to the missing note musicians in Purgatory, surely there are many soap boxes- to get a better view, of course.
