How many "rules" relating to knives can you guys list? I'll start it.

If you borrow a folder, you hand it back to them the same way the handed it to you... open or closed.

when given[gifted?] a knife a coin must be given in return.i had a customer do this after paying by check

I thought a coin should be included with the knife when given as a gift. I could be wrong though.

Hey Guys...

After using and admiring a friends knife..
Give it back to him, and go and get your own Damn knife!!

When a knife is given/gifted,a coin is given back or the friendship is cut.
What I have been under the impression of 20+ years.:)
Have gotten more coins than I've given.
Never got a Krugerrand though.

If a knife is given as a gift a coin must be recieved or the friendship will end.

When at a knife show, always ask the maker/representative if you may see the knife before picking it up.

Don't be stupid while handling someone else's knife unless you are prepared to buy or replace it, ie opening & closing a maker's $600 custom butteryfly knife.

When you are done looking at someone else's knife hand it back to them handle first and edge facing out and away from you both.

Very funny..... feel the same way sometimes. Very few of my close friends carry a knife daily.

I also have been told (by my Grandfather who gave me my first knife) you need to give a coin when gifted a knife.

I really think "gifted" should be reserved for the quality of being well-endowed. as with a talent, for instance.
You don't give knives as a present to customers who pay by check, so that doesn't count... unless you make the rule sth like, for the metal of the knife you get, you must give a token piece of metal in return.
Also, I think it would be helpful to differentiate between etiquette and superstition. The coin thing is superstition. Not throwing knives at people unless they're watching would be etiquette.
I can't think of any rules of knife etiquette that wouldn't go for other things as well (give back a bike you've borrowed in the state you got it, or better; don't throw bikes at people unless... :) )
Still thinking,
t.
