I picked up this horn at the knife expo in Buena Park this weekend. I am not into horns but this caught my eye it had caught my eye the first day i arrived on Saturday. I think it is a nice piece. Alot of people were looking at it but nobody bought it so i decided on sunday if it were still there then I would make an offer and buy it. I don't know much about horns, does anyone have any info for me. Thanks for the help. My daughter was thrilled when i had asked her to take a picture with it she is 3' 2" tall. RENE

Looks like Elk. Makes nice handles. The solid part of the horn(the rind) is not very thick. Sometimes only 1/8 inch.you need to pick the areas you want for handles with care so as not to have to do much sanding.
heres one of mine

Looks like Elk to me also.

Some elk is real thin, some can be almost solid. I've found both in the same antler. If it's thick enough, grinding smouth it will be real white, like ivory.

TJ Smith, I guess i better get busy making some knives. LOL. What is something like this worth? by the way that is a nice looking knife. RENE

It is probably elk but could be European Red deer. Both are similar in shape and size. I have some red deer in the shop right now about that size.

TJ Smith knows an elk antler when he sees one. Its a 6 point, left side shed antler from a Roosevelt elk found in the west. A nice one too. Hunting for sheds in the spring is common around here and sometimes very rewarding if both sides are found. I sold several smaller ones for $8.00 per pound to another knifemaker but a matched pair could be sold for hundreds to a taxidermist or collector. The brow tines (the 2 points at the bottom) make the best handles.
