Started this thread as a heads up and FYI for all after my knife just "pooped out" on me.

The knife that pooped was a Gerber mini fast draw. Just stopped working one day....went floppy. Had cut some minor box with it and then was just playing with it as I was driving.. Won't lock, the AO stopped working...like it needs viagra. It was only 8 months old and didn't get alot of hard use.

Will never buy a Gerber again.

Another dissatisfied Gerber customer.

how unsurprising.
(Friends don't let friends buy Gerbers.)

I have a CRKT M-16z that the liner lock failed on me. I sent it back to CRKT and they sent me a new one. Made me leery of that brand however. A new knife is fine but I would rather keep my fingers.

An education rarely comes without cost, grasshopper. Consider the payment for the knife as an education.

Gerber uses many substandard materials in its knives and now makes blades out of steel it used to consider good only for liner material.

Pity. Gerber used to be respected.

I had a BUCK alpha hunter.
Stabbed it into wood in reverse grip and the liner failed and cut my pinky and ring finger. I will add almost every gerber i owned also failed. That why , NO MORE BUY

I have bought a CRKT m16 for my brother that completly fell apart after not even a month of use. Also a buck mayo, the cheaper ones. The pivot screws stripped out and the plastic washers wore to nothing, both didn't last more than a month each. Not what I expected out of either of them.

NEVER do anything with a locking blade that you would not do with a slipjoint. All locks are capapble of failing. A lock does not turn a folder into a fixed blade!

A Ontario Spec5 I received last year started rattling right after I got it. I figure I only had $45.00 in it so I'll cut open and take a look. I used my Spyderco Mili to slice the rubber grip off to find it had a short shot. The grip material was supposed to fit tight around the shank but was not formed right. I don't believe it would have ever came off but it was annoying as hell! I grabbed some scrap wood from the wood-bin at work and milled a fine set of grips, glued & screwed them together and it is still serving with pride around property. I also got a SOG Tomahawk around the same time with the Green Wooden handle. After about 20minutes of making kindling out of 2x4s the handle split. again a $40.00 piece, what did I expect. Gave it to my buddy and he put the head on a piece of 6AL4V Ti for me with a handle ring of the same material. We had to drill some big holes in the handle to lighten it up, but we sorted it out and I really enjoy using it know. I called SOG when it happened and they were willing to make it right but I would have to send mine back and wait for them. I passed, but they were concerned and willing to help. SOG has since switched the handle material to FRN and I understand They are doing very well. Merry Christmas All!!!

+1 But... have a look at the Extrema Ratio RAO... If you happen to make that lock fail (I mean the screw on safety pin as well) I will buy you another one :D Just kidding... I can't even aford it myself. You are right when you say that folders are capable of failing. So far I got lucky but a few times I thought: if this thing snaps closed now... I won't be able to pick my nose any more.

The only knife that so far failed on me was a Muela Cazorla (from Spain). I haven't taken it appart but it seems to have a narrow tang inside the stag handle. After some chopping it got play and rattled quite a lot. I don't feel confident using it hard now.

A lot of Gerbers have failed on me, except for the Gator that I bought in 2000, and the EZ Out I recieved as a gift in 1998. I miss those days.
Quite a few Cold Steels have also failed.
I've only had one "failure" from a fixed blade, and it was a very old Schrade. The handle came off.

i have snapped the blades in half on a few cheap kitchen knives using them to split wedges and pegs.

snapped a cheap bait knife in half battoning a 3.5 inch diameter fresh cut maple. the blade was 4 inches long. i was surprised that the knife made it half way through the log before snapping. if i wanted to i could have made a nice little box cutter with the inch of blade left on the handle.

i mostly use slipjoints for most things, but i have never had any difficulty with those. its when you start getting used to having a safety mechanism that you forget to take those extra steps of caution.

After using hundreds of knives, I have yet to have one fail for any reason other than sheer stupidity on my part.

Gerber used to be a GREAT knife company, until Fiskars bought it.:thumbdn::mad:

I know these are really good knives...and the customer service is really great...however...

I have only had 2 knives that have ever "broken" or malfunctioned on me...ever.

Both of them were SOG's.

One was a Pentagon Elite that had the older lock...it quit locking completely, becoming a flimsy bladed knife (the company replaced it with a newer model with an axis lock)

The second was the big Pentagon Elite II...this has an axis lock...but after opening it and closing it quickly a half a dozen times in sucession, the lock actually came apart and flew across the room! I have it in a bag...I haven't sent it back yet...a buddy of mine says that opening and closing it over and over (literally...6-10 times in a row or so) was abuse to the knife. I tend to think otherwise...this knife was not cheap and should have held up better IMHO. But...I am not sure what to do with it...so it has stayed in a box (with the broken lock part) for several weeks now.

I know SOG makes a fine product...however, I am a bit jaded to them myself at the present time, and must have the worst luck ever. I have tons of CRKT's and have never had any problems with any of them.
