If for what ever reason you got into a self defense situation. Would you prefer a "full plain edge blade" or would you prefer a "fully serrated blade"? Which is better for cutting and doing damage to a Bad Guy? All swords are plain egded , correct? "Serrated" would be good for ripping through clothes and reaching the bad guys skin/tissue? A "plain-edge" might be better for "STABBING" purposes? Let me know.

I'd rather be able to run a 4 minute mile!!

There were some Middle Eastern and Indian swords that were serrated. Though they sort of had an inverted serration than what we're used to. I think serrations with toothy points that stick out will likely weaken the edge in a long blade.

Anyway there is a whole world of blades in that geographic area that no one is using for modern knife inspiration. New knife makers out to creat a new style should really look into it.

History might have made many mistakes but evolution is not kind to the weak. (now that i have given my token 'oh so cool' duh phrase..)

It seems that traditionally swords have been made of plain edge. Katanas and the like, maybe serrations will not be as 'smooth' a cut if you were to use a weapon that requires a full swing.

However some of the meanest knives (from the Philippines where I hail from) have serrations not meant to tear at clothes or armour but to RIP flesh.

speaking only from opinion i would think that stabbing wounds would favour serrations or serartions that 'pull back' (slanted back) but for long swords which require a full smooth swing you would probably need a plain edge.

slash versus stab.

i'd rather run, if not possible rather have a gun, if not accesible a serrated blade

Probably serrated, it tears through clothes much easier, and that is usually very necessary...

This sums it up for me (11" blades, hollow ground, plain edge superfast). If, heaven forbid, my enemies still stand when I'm out of bullets, these will come into play. (I pray that never happens.)

These are from www.hossom.com Of course, someday I'll maybe get one from www.bladerigger.com with a plain edge too, if I ever win a huge award. My preference, but I wouldn't feel bad if someone handed me a fine serrated edge.

My chunk o' change,

Matt

IMHO if I had to take a knife to a knife fight I would want to take my Cold Steel LTC Kukri. If I had to use a folder I would choose the Cold Steel Vaquero Grand. My main concern would be long range chops and slashes with the LTC Kukri, and good deep slahes with the Vaquero.
Stay Sharp,
