My buddy just ordered his first Strider (a DB) and in discussing the knife I came up with a few questions. (I'm saving up for mine!)

What is the purpose of the tigerstripe finish on the knives I see online? Break up the outline of the blade? What other finishes are available and for what purpose?

Somebody mentioned the cord wrap handle actually absorbs fluids (blood, fuel, etc.) is this true? How hard is it to re-wrap the handle if needed?

Thanks!

the stripes are there because it's bad ass.

i don't think the nylon wrap really "absorbs" stuff like fluids and blood. I mean it will to an extent, but it's nylon, not cotton. maybe i'm completely wrong.

I always thought it'd be so cool to have a leather wrapped handle, the same style as it is now.

I'm thinking that the inner core of the cord doesnt absorb much of anything at all due to the outer shell's woven pattern. When pulled tight during the wrap job, it seems that the outer will squeeze the inner so that nothing can be absorbed.
But Yea, the space between the windings will load up quickly... your hand will grind in whatever is there.

I too would like to see some Striders done in leather.
I've thought about leather wrapping my own...

Leather, unlike 550 cord, will absorb anything that touches it.
It will host a huge amount of bacteria and other crap.

The cord is made of nylon. It is completely synthetic. It CANNOT rot. It will not host bacteria or other bad stuff.

The issues with cord are:
1. HEAT. It will light.
2. Abrasion. You can grind it away if you do A LOT of crawling.

Thanks for you interest

Mick
