I have a friend who just finished his paramedic training and wants a lore useful than what he has. He now uses a CRKT M16 series of which I dont remember the model. He asked what I would suggest would be a good knife for some of the tasks he may encounter. I thought a Spyderco assist or Blackhawk CQD but what would you suggest?

This S&W rescue tool has been a great tool. I have had it for years and know several folks who use them day in and day out. It comes with a blunt tip and a spring loaded glass breaker. The serrations cut extremely well. I see them on line here and there for around $40.00. Just a one idea. Congrats to your friend!!!:D:thumbup:

I remember a knife called the Blackhawk Hawkhook. It was an interesting looking knife for around $30. No one knew anything about it, though.
Also take a look at the Boker Rescom with a fixed blade.

Something simple, with a good sturdy pocket clip and one hand opening, but not "urban commando"...

Former EMT. Tell you buddy to enjoy, it's great work and I still miss it.

Not an EMT, but I'm a retired cop. All I ever needed was a serrated Spyderco Delica. I suspect the same will be true for you.

I'm not an EMT but I'm a ICU RN and I use my Spyderco Tenacious all the time. Its sheeple friendly and a great value knife so if you screw it up or lose it, its not the end of the world.

Personally i just carry my spyderco delica 4. All the hype about busting windows and cutting seatbelts? Well all hype. I have broken 2 windows before and never had to cut a seatbelt yet and thats after 8 years.

Most of the work in this field can be done with a pair of trauma shears. I think you will find that knife will remain unused for the most part.

The one situation that I can think of that would require a blade with a good length cutting edge is to cut through rope in an attempted suicide case (hanging person.) I am sure there are other uses but I can't think of them offhand. Something small and out of the way like a spyderco serrated delica or the H1 steel salt series if you anticipate a lot of exposure to sweat.

Although I do not carry one myself a leatherman type multi tool could come in handy a lot of times (pliers for 02 tank and screw driver bits for odd and ends.)

Although a lot of EMTs carry cutlery in pouches (not a good idea in my opinion) I would recommend carrying concealed you may run into people you wouldn't want seeing let alone reaching for your blade if a scuffle should happen.

I have a Cold Steel rescue that sits in my bag unused for the most part as well as a Vic Swiss Army tinker that is used once in a while, for the screw drivers usually, this also sits in my bag.

I wouldn't even dream of bringing anything with a sharp edge inside a mental health lockup or correctional facility. If you forget to remove it from your person before going in, I would want it to remain out of sight.

I happen to love the looks and feel of large tacticool types of knives but on the job I think they would just be an extra burden to carry and keep track of.

When I was an EMT, my favorite knife was the Hoffman 911 rescue tool.
