Knife for a friend

I know, I shouldn't be posting another "which knife" thread, but outside of Spyderco, and Leatherman stuff, I'm pretty much lost.

OK, my friend wants a knife that includes the following:

Thumbstud.

Liner-lock, or pretty much anything other then a back-lock.

Aus-8 or above.

FRN, or G10 handles.

Liners preferable, but not a big thing.

And.... $20-$50ish, but the cheaper the BETTER.

Please reply with all your edged tool wisdom. :)

You might beable to find a BM mini-grip for around 50$. 154CM, Thumbstud, Axis lock etc. Fits your friends needs.

Boker trance:
-Ambi thumb stud
-AUS8 blade
-G10 scale one side and stainless on the other
-Frame Lock
-Cheap

He's missing out by avoiding the back lock and thumb hole though... I love my trance, but it doesn't hold anything on the Delica.

SOG Flash II.

An Assisted-Opener with thumbstuds.
Not a liner-lock, but not a back-lock either. (Piston-lock).
AUS-8 steel.
Zytel handles (Same as FRN).
Can't recall if it has liners. Don't believe so. But, not a big thing; like you said.
Forget the retail price of $72.00
(With alittle searching, you can get one for only $50.00).

Got mine at Dick's Sporting Goods. If there's one in your area, stop by.

But seriously..... $20.00??

I know, I told him so, but he's more into the "folding dagger" look of the Benchmades. I think I tell him to get a Mini-Ambush. I'll try to convince him to get a Mini-Grip..

Thanks for the replys.

You may want to be careful that you don't convert a sheep to a ninja :p ... though the mini-grip should be safe for even the most hardcore ninjas, if he'll drop the cash.

Good luck getting him to buy the mini-grip... it may be the difference between 1337hood and becoming a knife knut.

Tomorrow I'm giving my best friend the option to buy any Spyderco that he wants (for his birthday) and I'll drop between $20-$30 to help him buy it. That way, he has no choice but to get a knife where it isn't all about pretty looks or ninjaness (he has a problem with said ninjaness).

Have you tried convincing a recently converted sheeple to spend a "considerable" amount of money on knives? :thumbdn:

Maybe later he'll spring for something better.

I guess you have a good point there.
I'm glad he's not picking out a .99 cent keychain knife with a soft rubber handle at the check-out lane of Auto-Zone.

Thanks for everybody's opinions, a trip to the local knife store tommorow with my padowan-friend will tell us much more.

So let me get this straight, your buying him a knife then giving it to him? If so make sure you give him a silver coin to retun to you after he recive's his knife, save the friendship ;)

Nope. He asked me for some advice about knives, and I, in turn, ask you guys! :) I told him to get a Spyderco, but he doesn't like them very much. (way it looks. )

I just took a quick look at the locking knife part of the A.G. Russell website and it looks like they have a couple of knives that would meet your requirements:
Featherlite
Benchmade Snipe
CRKT Montana Gentleman

Spydercos took some getting used to for me. For a good year or so I thought that they were some of the ugliest things around (IMO some of them still are :o ), but the Delica now ranks among one of my favorite looking knives. Maybe he'll grow in to Spydies too...

Teach your padowan well, my friend.

:)
