Knife for a Marine?

My nephew, a Marine, was advised by his sargeant to get his affairs in order, especially his will, because he could soon be seeing another part of the world.

Do any forum members know if all Marines are issued a KABAR. If so, , that is fine. If not, can they carry a knife of their choosing? If so, I will send him off with some sturdy steel.

Thanks for your help.

For a Fixed blade send a Busse Combat or a Strider.
For a folder, send a Strider or Mission Titanium, or an Emerson.
I think any of those would fit the bill. I am not sure about KBars being issued, and the above knives I've mentioned aren't cheap but they are the best. (At least in my eyes)

I've sold to Marine Force Recon, from what I could tell They weren't issued anything besides a bayonet. My 7" bladed Model 5 has been proven by them.

Ask him to ask his sergeant what is o.k. with respect to knives. I heard to depends on the outfit you are with as to what is o.k. to carry.

What a Marine may carry is strictly up to the whim of his/her commanding officer, his/her MOS and where they will be stationed. If you'll recall, many of the troops in Desert Storm were told to keep all their scary looking big blades packed away because we didn't want the Arabs to think we were sword carrying barbarians. We don't want them to think we are bad-ass looking warrior types, now do we? These decisions were made by CO's with political ambitions I'm sure.

Before buying the Marine in your family a decent sheath knife, you should find out from him/her what they are allowed to carry.

As a case in point, my base CO would not even let us carry the venerable Buck 110. A Marine without a knife?!
Just another case of "we know what's best for you, just leave it all to us, your Big Brother!"

It usally goes: if your T/O weapon is a rifle, you get a bayonet. If you are issued a pistol (or anything you can't stick a bayonet on) , you get a Kabar. Kabars seem to turn up every where though. Best advice has already been given: ask the boss. That said, the word can change day to day during pack ups. A decent medium-size folder is probably the best bet to make the trip with him (besides what he is issued). If they don't go straight into the s#*t, you can probably mail him something.
Regards, Greg

Marines Issue Ka-bar to M60 , S.A.W. Gunners etc. They can't affix the M9 to them. The M9 issue is usually very dull and abused. I'd suggest A small fixed blade, or large folder. Keep it light as the mountains will be a rough hiking terrain. His 80 lbs + of other gear will be enough of a payload to carry.
