Well technically hes a sailor but as a corpsman he is attached to a marine unit.

Anyway one of my freinds is shipping out soon and I want to pick him up a spyderco to go with him, I am leaning towards one of the SALT series.

My question is Does spyderco Have any kind of program for folks who dont have freinds like me to buy them knives.

I remember this past christmass that a catalog I occasionally buy from had a program where knives could be purschased specifically for soldiers over seas at a discounted price. the company then distributed tha knives as it saw fit.

I know spyderco Has given knives to soldiers, but I believe that spydie Fans would be willing to chip in to equip those serving with quality tools.

A while back we twisted TazKristi's arm into allowing us to help with this. Please take a look at this thread on the Spyderco factory forum for details.

As for your friend, the Salt series knives are a great choice, and, for a corpsman, the Atlantic might be the best choice of all.

This is exactly what I was looking for, Thanks for the Info.

As for the Salt its not a lock yet, I have about 5 patterns I am deciding between.

Salt: Atlantic Fully serrated or Tasman Fully serrated

Endura: Partially serrated

Assist:

DiAllara: Partially serrated

As a corpsman I would think he would get a great amount of use from one of the assist models. I have never been a fan of non locking knives but thats just me. I have an assist II and think very highly of it. His mission may not require an assist II but one of the other models may suit him very well. Don't know where he will be serving but the best of luck to him.

I would consider one of the larger rescue models. I kept an assist one in my combat lifesaver bag. Its blunt tip made it pretty useless for anything but a rescue knife. I feel like a sharpened tip makes the rescue more versatile.

I think the Pacific Salt is perfect for any Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, or Coast Guardsman.

It's very light-weight; which is a huge plus considering all the other gear our military carries.
It simple cannot rust; which is great considering that our military is often out in all kinds of weather, and often soaked for days at a time.
The H-1 is very easy to get extremely sharp.
The large thumb-hole works very well with gloves too!

I wish they had been around when I was a Soldier.

Hopefully this week I'll be sending a full serrated Endura 4 to someone who recently enlisted to be an army medic. Just gotta get around to packing it up and making a trip to the post office...

I was really thinking a rescue model or one of the salts, but i figured you just can't go wrong with an Endura either. :)

I recommend the Pacific Salt SE plus a Byrd Cara Cara PE.

Wow, that one of the better ones i've heard. The cara cara cost little, but well bulit, plus a salt in SE to boot.

I have never served, but would think that this combo should do well. All of my friends that served, had crappy gerber and should, and they all come back in one piece.

When I was a Army Medic, I used just a standard CE Delica. Later it was replaced by a Emerson CQC-7.

The Assists are nice, but rather bulky in the pockets.

Also. If he doesn’t have a multi-tool get him one of those. It will save the knife from some horrible fate as a screwdriver.

I carry an Atlantic while on duty (L.E.O.) everyday. It can take the abuse, while not having to worry about it being wet or dirty. It also has the VERY consistent lockback offered by the Seki Spydercos. My vote goes to the Salt series.

Thanks Everyone for your advise. I am pretty sure its going to be a Salt, He is headed for a short stint in mongolia, then over to Iraq, I figure rust resistance is good in either environment.

I like the Pacific as its a good utilitarian design good for pretty mych everything, the Tasman has that nasty curve that could make it usefull in rescue or brutal as a last ditch defense weapon.

I may pick up one of each, let him pick and keep the other for me.

The byrd is a great suggestion, I may pick him up a PE model as a back up.

I have also been considering the multi tool, A leatherman may have to be on my list for him.

My budget is limited, but I am going to try to work the best package I can.

If anyone has any other suggestions please keep them coming.

Oh yes one more thing

Handle Color, I was going to go with black figuring tactical (even though silver blades arent) But yellow seems like a good idea to make it easier to recover a dropped knife. any vets have suggestions?

Yellow, without a doubt. Knives needing to be a "tactical color" in situations like that is complete nonsense. If you need a knife as a last ditch weapon, that means your gun and the bad guys gun malfunctioned at the same time.

Wow, that one of the better ones i've heard. The cara cara cost little, but well bulit, plus a salt in SE to boot.

I have never served, but would think that this combo should do well. All of my friends that served, had crappy gerber and should, and they all come back in one piece.

I have given a few knives away to friends and acquaintances who serve in the National Guard, LEOs, EMTs, volunteers, firefighters, medical personnel, etc.

When I have enough with me, the soldiers headed to Iraq generally pick a Tasman or Pacific in SE and the Byrd Cara Cara PE. I like for them to have both a SE and PE, but I always give a PE Byrd because I'm not rich. Their choices are generally SE => Pacific, Atlantic, Tasman, or Salt 1; and PE => Cara Cara, Meadowlark, or Robin. They are always FRN.

So I made My Choice,

I just ordered a Pacific Salt him (and picked the smaller Salt for myself). I went with the Yellow handle for both,(again he's a corpsamn not an Operator)

I also picked up a leatherman Kick for him and may pick up a small sharpener to put in with it (most likeley a lanskey dogbone).

But most of all I am sending him with my hopes and prayers for a safe Return!
