knife for an MP

A friend of mine is a Military Police officer in the Army Natinal Guard and she's being shipped off to Bosnia in a couple months for a year. While she's there she's designated to be a gunner and carry around the M-249 SAW, an awesome weapon. She was issued a spankin new and fully serrated Frost Cutlery knife to carry with her. I can't let her go over there with a POS knife like that so I wanna get her one she can depend on. I was thinking about one of these; a Microtech SOCOM, Benchmade AFCK, Spyderco Military, or a Spyderco Police. Not too sure which would suit a lady MP best. Anyone have any other recommendations? I need some help singling out which blade to buy.

Thanks,
Chris

Rock on MP! I'm going to basic on Jan. 3rd and then to MP school...:D. Tell her good luck and kick@$$.

Me? I heard Spyderco is coming out with a new Military next year so I'll get that...currently I have a SOG X-Ray that I would use as my folder in the military, though...I'd rather have a fully serrated knife (also another excuse to get a new knife;)). Basically any knife that is wicked tough would be great, IMO.

I would recommend either a fully serrated Military or fully serrated SS Police.

The Millie has a 4" CPM440V steel blade that can hold a good edge for extended periods of time. Although many KnifeKnuts aren't too trusting of linerlocks, this one is very well constructed (nested in the G10) that is very reliable and durable. For its' size, the Millie is also very slim and lightweight.

The SS Police has ATS-55 steel, newer versions have VG-10 steel I believe, as well as the solidity of a stainless steel handle and very tough lockback.

Just my .02 :D

Of the 4 you mentioned I would recomend the Microtech Socom. Its a good sized knife, Fit and Finish are second only to perhaps CRK and it will go with her uniform well with the standard sheath. If the Socom is passed up as an option, My second choice would be the Benchmade. Its one hell of a knife as well. Personally I love the Spderco Police, but don't think it does well with BDUs, And the SS handles might not be prefered for handling in 100+ degree weather. Thats my .02. Go with the Socom. She'll love it.

I'll also suggest a SS Spydie Police model. If you can find one, a G-10 Police model would also be a good choice, as it's lighter and more "gripable" than the stainless model. (I'd LOVE to see Spyderco come out with a stainless Police model that has the scales knurled or checkered for a non-slip grip.).

They issued her a Frost?! Someone please tell me that's not standard issue for our military now!

NO!!!! I have never seen a Frost handed to a Solider as part of there issued gear. Thank god, Lets hope it was her Chain of Command having some fun with her. Or maybe the supply officer was trying to get rid of some of his home shopping network mistakes :)

Rock, of the choices you've mentioned, I'd definitely consider the Benchmade AFCK (or AFCK II) with a liner-lock and maybe even a combo-edge. As much as I hate combo-edges, that feature might come in handy to cut off flex-cuffs in a pinch and you can clean a liner-lock with a paper match. Coated blade might not hurt either if the weather gets bad there and those G-10 handles earn their keep in the cold. No matter which choice you make, YOU check it out first and see if you like it. If so, she probably will too.

Some other items to think about are a good multi-tool (SOG, Leatherman), a pair of those shears like paramedics use--again, for flex-cuffs and PLENTY of other stuff, and a good sharpener (possibly a Spyderco Sharpmaker or Cerahone's Tri-angle deal--and know how to clean them).

As for the Frost "Boonie-Basher Special?" Hey, she can always keep it in the Hummer for emergencies, but I'd probably avoid actually carrying something like--try to stay on good terms with the "locals" and since she's already got the squad weapon, save weight and space. Stay low in that Hummer's turret friend-girl!!!

Spyderco Military thats what it's made for! or The SOCOM great knife also. Might ask her what she is allowed to wear with here uniform 1st, I have a freind who is also a MP and they won't let them carry a knife in uniform that shows on thier uniform ie. pocket clip. I got her a nice neck knife to have just in case, can be hidden.

I used to carry a Gerber Command II;
I was an 11Bravo (infantry) Gerber don't make the "II" anymore (I don't think?forumite(s)?) I've been out
19 yrs ; I don't know that troops can still even carry a "fixed"
blade, but if I were still on TDY
I'd probably be carrying my CRKT (not a POS IMO ) Ryan "Plan B". It has a coupla "carry option(s)"; one
being you can clip it to your waistband or pistol belt (the clip is removable BTW ) It has a bead chain that enables it to be carried as a "neck knife" & finally, reinforced hole(s) along the sheath/scabbard to "lash" it to equipment ( like webgear, backpacks, etc.) You can get this beauty in plain edge, or combination
( more versatile IMO, from a soldiers opinion ;)) from :

www.cutleryshoppe.com

All for $28, plus $8.50 shipping. If
you need it in a hurry, just add $2
for UPS 2nd Day Air.

Just my two cents worth, gang.;)

most woman that i work with like the microtech udt with serrated edge and of course in a pretty color. good luck

Sorry I am going to add to the mess. Yet I would feel delinquint if I did not at least mention possibly the most useful knife for suck duty.

Al Mar SERE 2000

The knife has THICK stainless liners and the lock up is like a bank vault. Grip is great in any orientation. blade is one of the most useful profiles on a folder. Equally adept at SD or utility. The VG-10 blade comes with the sharpest factory blade I have ever felt (maybe not a big deal, but could be if she is not skilled at sharpening) and holds the edge well.

The pocket clip on this one is a mixed blessing. It rides extremely low in the pocket, so much that it looks like a nice pen clip. Howeverm this makes for a slightly more difficult draw.

If I could only keep one of the knives I own (and I own several of the knives you mentioned and a lot of other nice production pieces in the same range as well as a Sebenza) it would be this one.

Any of the knives mentioned should serve her well. But if you wanted to get her the "best" I would go with the S2K. They can be had fairly inexpensively on the forums fairly often or from most any internet dealer.

Sorry for the longwinded post, but like I said I believe in this knife that much and think it would be perfect for your friend. Good luck.

I've been in the buisness for 8 years now, and all though most of those years have been in a patrol car I have been deployed as well. Here is my short list on great no nonsense folding knives I have carried and used in the line of duty in the field on on the road. No particular order. These are knives I have carried and relied on.

1. MT SOCOM (full size, black blade)
2. Al Mar SERE 2000
3. Spyderco Military (serrated)
4. BM AFCK (carried and lost in a hole in Korea:( )
5. SOG Tomcat (an awesome knife, but not a one hander)
6. Emerson Commander

I would personally suggest a new AFCK with the axis lock and a black blade. This way she doesn't have to spend time maintaining it. I don't carry any of these knives any longer but they all served well.

Rock -

All good thoughts posted so far.

As a fulltime police officer AND currently deployed with the special operations community in Kuwait I recommend the following based on both experiences to date -

Get her TWO Spyderco Military Models. One for primary carry and one as a back-up should she lose the primary for whatever reason. All total this will cost you roughly what one SOCOM will, and the Military Model is a better knife for her line of work and the AO she'll be operating in.

Rock,

Listen to GW. The cutting power of the flat ground blade of the Military is nothing short of awesome! Get her a serrated one and a plain edged one. Serrated for hard work and the PE for backup. That or get her a Serrated one and a sharpmaker kit. That will be greatly needed. Forget what I said about the AFCK. I did some thinking and thought my Military was better for the wear. It just wansn't used as hard. Let us know what you get her.

The Al Mar SERE 2000 is also a good choice ; no need to justify that by a lengthy post ;) everyone else has good suggestion(s), I look at what's
BOTH cost effective and generally not a POS (I don't consider CRKT knives in that vernacular ;)) I like my Ryan "Plan B" and if still on duty would be carrying it. It's not
what the damn thing costs,IMHO, it's what will do at the moment of truth. But the SERE 2000 is a fine knife ;)
(Al Mar would be proud. R.I.P.)
The debate rages on....

Thanks for all the help! I really apprecite it.

I'm going to talk to her and see what she can carry and how. I have a serrated Spydie Military on the way. Makes me wish I'd have kept mine. If any of you start hurting with the money situation, don't sell your knives :(. Anyways, I held onto a kydex neck sheath that can be used with the Military. That'd be good if she wanted to carry it around her neck.

Will probably also get a plain Military, an S2K in black, an AFCK axis, and maybe a SOCOM. Whatever she doesn't take I can have :D . As far as sharpeners, I have a Lansky setup which has worked well for me. Would that be sufficient for her? I'm not sure how well it does on serrations.

Yeah, she was issued a Frost. It might have been a joke and I hope so. She showed it to me and was like, its just a knife and can cut. I took it, looked at it, and shook my head thinking no good, no good. The weird thing is that the same drill she was issued the knife she was also issued a brand new 9mm side-arm.

What about serrated Military and a plain Plan B (i heard ya Allen ;))?

Still open to any and all suggestions. I have a bit of time left.

Thanks,
Chris

Sorry for jumping in late but:
if weight is not a problem i would opt for a pair:
CRKT CKFF + Companion!

Just a idea, if carry in uniform is limitet,
how about organizing(buying) a spare Double-Pistol-Mag-Holder
and put a knife and a Flashlite (Surefire/Streamlite/Innova) into it?
Would this work in your military??
