What's up guys. So I ordered my first high end knife a small sebenza and it should be here Saturday. Then I thought to myself I would like to surprise my dad with a knife. He isn't really a knife guy but he always uses a cheapo knock off swiss army knife that has absolutely no edge to open mail. Since he owns his own business he opens a lot of mail everyday. The knife should look elegant not too big maximum blade length around 3.5" I think the smaller the better since it wont look too threatening in the business environment. I was looking into the mnandi it's pretty nice. Any other suggestions? Also maximum I would pay is $300 im only 18 and only work 2 days a week now at my fathers business since I started college so I would have to save a bit for a month or two.

Something like a desk knife perhaps, or even a nice letter opener?

Id definitely suggest the Mnandi. Its one of the best gentlemanly/non threatening knives, not to mention top notch quality. Short of that, the Spyderco Domino is a good choice. It has top quality steel with a smaller people friendly blade. Price of $200 or so depending where you look.

Thanks for the suggestions Silvanus and Bob. Going to have to put some more research in this and see what knife people recommend the most. So far the Mnandi is at top. But $375 is a hefty price. Will see if my sister would like to put $75 or so into it so I can give it to him as a birthday gift since that is also in late november.

This thing looks pretty sweet would go with his bamboo plant and it's vase that is on his desk.

Mine is a different style shape but I think from the same maker. It's made from layers of steel, bronze, and copper. Paid a hundred dollars or less for it at AG Russell's years ago.

I might just ask him which he likes but not show the price since it might encourage his answer.

There are a lot of nice blade out there that would meet your fathers need. The ZT 0770 CF is gorgeous, but may be a little too modern for him. Spyderco Caly 3 CF/ZDP-189 is a perfect office edc, and is a back lock which he may be more familiar with. The Mnandi is nice as you say, but over your budget unless you buy used.

I've been trying to get my dad interested in knives for years, but he's just not into it. My mom loves that I'm into them, but doesn't carry one herself. (Because we work together, she just borrows one of mine).

LionSteel has some elegant folders that are under your limit. Check out the Opera series, the SR-1 and 2 Aluminum versions.

Good luck.

Would your dad know the difference between a $300 knife and a $40 knife? Unless it matters to him, you're buying it to make you feel good, not him. He'll appreciate any gift, and would likely strangle you for spending $300 on something he does not see the value in. Find something nice that looks good, like the CASE, or a Boker Damascus letter opener, or something along those lines. I would lose my mind if someone gave me a $300 letter opener if I don't care about knives.

Boker makes a Damascus Letter Opener that you might like. It has incredible fit and finish with 300 layers of cool. I found them for about $144 at some of the online stores.

I think both of these suggestions are great, but I think your dad might prefer the Kershaw. The ZT0770CF has more technology, and the blade shape is ideal for opening mail. It's very lightweight, and has just enough bling to impress his co-workers. Plus, I think it is made in USA, while I know the Caly 3 is not. Old guys like me have issues with spending big bucks on Asian made knives.

Good Luck

My usual recommendation to these is almost always a BM Megumi. Great modern gentleman's folder.

As a possibility, take a look at the Great Eastern Cutlery #65 (Ben Hogan). It is a long slim slip joint available at places like KnivesShipFree and other GEC vendors. I have it in stag. A basic Trapper pattern would work too probably one in the 3.5-3.75" closed length.

A Case Trapper is always a good choice.

A Spyderco Native 5 or Delica 4 would also be a great choice and not scary looking.

If he's carrying a knockoff Victorinox maybe he would appreciate the real deal. Something nice like the Alox Pioneer or Farmer? Don't get too hung on the price, a nice gift is a nice gift regardless of the cost.

I was just about to write the same thing. Get him a genuine Victorinox and offer to keep an edge on it for him. The alox Cadet is worth a look. Slim and pocketable.
