Knife for Dad?

Hey Guys I would like some advice here. My dad's birthday is in a couple weeks and I'd like to get him a new fixed blade. He has been using an old buck and kabar for years so I thought he might like something new (besides, they are both in pretty bad shape). He's not into big knives, so I'd like one with a blade length or right around 5 inches. It needs to be more of a general utility/camp blade. It will be used for whittling, fire prep, food prep, and of course other cutting tasks around the house and campground. Chopping is not a concern because he has an axe and hatchet. I'd like to spend no more than $100. Right now I'm thinking of the SRKW Howling rat and the Becker Companion. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Nick

A Cold Steel Master Hunter might not be a bad choice.

Or the Temperance, small FB that probably works well... there's the passaround and you could see the review.

As mentioned in other posts, I would also recommend the Spyderco Fred Perrin or Temperance fixed blades.

Good Luck. :D

The Howling Rat sounds like a great idea. Other than that, a Fällkniven F1 would be a knife you might want to consider.

Since your Dad has been using a Buck and a Kabar it sounds like he likes things a little more on the traditional side.

If I were in your shoes I'd go for something custom, made of good steel, and with a natural handle material like wood, stag, or stacked leather. There are quite a few custom makers that sell knives like that - within your budget. I have factory knives that I like a lot, but just knowing that an actual person made the knife I'm using at the time means a lot to me. It all depends on what your Dad's tastes are.

If you wanted to go with a production knife you could get him a Blackjack Trailguide II. They are nice knives that will do all the tasks you mentioned and they look great. Ebay usually has tons of them for right around your budget.

Mate, Look at Marble's knives as these should be just what Dad likes.
Or go to A.G. Russel's web site for a "deer hunter. Lastly check out
Cutleryshoppe.com for some nice deals on fixed blades.

SOG X42 Field knife should work wonderfully for your Pop. I know I want one, and I have lots more expensive knives already.

Check out some of the shorter Leukus or longer Puukkos at www.ragweedforge.com. Nice knives with nice sheathes, they'd make a good present. (If you think he wouldn't mind a "primitive" look and feel, try the Rosellis--they are supposed to be superb.)
Or there's always the Fallkniven S1 or F1.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions.

AntDog: I think you have the right idea. I'm going to have to look into a more traditional knife. He probably will like that better. Maybe Mr. Dozier will be able to do something for me. I really like his work and am yet to buy one. Thanks again,

Nick

Nick, you obviously know what you're doing, cuz I was just about to type up a message suggesting a Dozier. Go with that instinct. :)

AntDog:

Gotta admit, I'm almost totally ignorant about the custom market, so bear with me if I ask anything silly ;)

...

You can get a traditional-style custom in a good steel with natural handles for under $100?

You're definitely talking about my kinda custom :D

Sooo... Who should I look at and where can I see their work?

Skip the traditional knives, get him something new. Like a Cold Steel SRK!
He all ready has those 2 old "traditional" blades. Introduce him to something non-traditional.

I second the vote...

AntDog:

Thanks a lot!

I'm not sure those are quite right for me, but your links are an eye-opener.

I guess this is my "this ain't impossible after all" moment... "Handmade knives are affordable after all..." ;)

Thanks much!
