I am thinking about getting my father a pocket knife for Christmas. I don't have a lot to spend this year, but want to get him something nice. I thought a knife would work well. He works with fiber, copper and other various cable types a good bit and has to cut them a lot. I want something that will lock and is easy to carry. A plain edge is preferred and something that can easily be opened and closed one handed would be perfect. I want to stay away from Buck (bad personal experience) but am open to anyone else. I have had good luck with Benchmade and Kershaw, but most of there stuff is pretty expensive. What do you guys think about Spyderco? Do they have something that would fit what I want? Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't suggest cutting cable with a pocketknife at all, but a serrated Spyderco could probably do it without too much trouble.

Personally, it sounds like a multitool would be a better choice for him.

perhaps the Spyderco Delica Or the Camillus EDC. Both are great and wont break the Bank. In this case I like the Camillus because the one I have is Scary sharp and will cut and strip wire sheathing (sp) verry well.

I am not talking about 4 guage battery cables. I am talking about thin, copper, like 28 guage or less. Where can I get the Camillius for cheap?

Check out Knifecenter.com or do an internet search and pick a company. Perhaps Ebay.

Fiber is cleaved, not cut.

If you cut an optical fiber with an ordinary knife, the fracturing and cracking you'll cause can propagate a foot or more into the cable. To "cut" an optical fiber, the outside of it is scored with a diamond or saphire tool and then a mechanical shock is applied which causes that score to propagate as a crack across the face of the fiber. This is very similar to how you cut window glass. You score it first on the surface with a tool and then tap that score line to cause the glass to crack right along the score.

Lol, I love how helpful some people are. You just couldn't help but toot your own horn, could you?

Gollnick knows quite a bit. Nothing wrong with showing it off. :)

Lol, I love how arrogant some people are. You just couldn't help but talk trash on an upstanding member of this board so you could look like an internet badass, could you? :)

And just because I feel like a nice guy tonight, I'll tell you to get a multitool for your dad, not a regular knife.

That was unnecessary.

Gollnick is right about the fiber though...a Spyderco Delica would probably be good for all of the other applications though.

A multitool would be a good choice, not for the knife blade but for the pliers and other tools.

For a knife a Victorinox electrician might be good, though not a one hand opener nor locking blade.

Gollnick,

Thanks for the info on optical fiber, I'm familiar with cutting glass but appreciate the lesson for the day from your post relative fiber optics.

It's good to know

I gave my father a Spyderco dragonfly and a CRKT Carson F4. Both are very inexpensive and seem to be ok. He doesn't use them hard and is happy with them. Got them off ebay and spent less than $40 for both.
