Knife for LEO

Hey guys. Just wondering what would be your suggestions for LEO duty use for a good knife? I'm just a lowly patrolman, no special swattish stuff. My dept takes a pretty dim view of nylon, velcro or anything but basketweave. I'm thinking a fixed blade knife is probably out of the question, unless maybe affixed to the vest on the inside, but that makes any kind of access questionable.

Strider guys, do you see any particular knives being more popular among the uniformed patrol guys? Darryl, what about you? What would you do if still in uniform?

I've been considering the Buck-Strider folder for duty, as it's more economical than the full custom, seeing as duty folders have a tendency to go bye-bye during foot pursuits, struggles, etc. I've lost more Spyderco's that way...

Thanks for any information.

Eric

Hey there,
Sorry for the slow response.
I would probably suggest an AR.
You can use the Tec-lock to attach it to your duty belt. The kydex clip is very minimal.
Shouldn’t draw any looks.

Let us know I few can be of more help.

Mick

I carried a DB in the front pocket of my body armor (out of sight, but easily available)and a BT in the warbag. The custom folders are the bomb. I daily carry a GB on my duty gear in the helicopter. If it was me in your position-I would save for a custom folder, and get a good sheath for belt carry. Or carry a small, less expensive utility folder and a DB concealed in your armor.

Mick, Nyeti,

Thanks for the info. I've found a good deal on an Emerson Commander, so that's going in the rt front pocket. I've got a couple of things to trade on a Strider, planning on shopping aroudnd the Badger Knife Show in WI, next weekend.

Thanks, again, guys.

One more...

Mick,

Ever given thought to a push-blade type knife? I know a trooper in IL that carries a cold-steel version like this behind his mag pouches. You can't really see it unless your on top of it, and he can just take it out when in the office near bosses.

Stay low,

Eric

When I was a young retarded policeman, I carried a Cold Steel push dagger clipped into the top of my body armor at the base of my neck under my collar. It was fast from my fingers laced behind my head, as if surrendering. Then I grew up a little. Can you imagine a cop ever sticking someone with a push dagger and nobody making a big deal about it.....I really like Mick's SLCC as a much better alternative to a push dagger (which is only good for one thing, and it isn't "cutting seatbelts"). If you already got a Commander (great EDC folder), I would go with either a small tough little concealable Strider fixed blade (DB, HT, or small EB) for on body carry, or a big Strider fixed blade in the war bag for deployment when you REALLY need a real knife (emergency breaching, vehicle rescue, etc...). Just my two cents.

nyeti,

Still being a young, retarded policeman :D , I have been trying to find the perfect solution to this. I believe we were discussing on the sure-fire forum. My final thought is that it's too difficult to *remember* that you even have a folder when somebody is fightin' for your pistola. You can get to one, and open it, with people slappin' pushing, biting, fightin', but will you remember you have it. It seems to me (never had this happen) that the main thought will be, "THIS SOB IS TRYING TO GET MY GUN, BEAT ON HIM, PROTECT THE GUN, MAKE HIM DIE!!!!" I could be off here, but if anybody has had someone attempt to disarm them, please feel free to share, I take correction well...;) I can only think that probably the Commander is the best solution for an LEO, since very few agencies are going to allow non-SWAT (and maybe even them) to carry any type of fixed blade in the open.

Your point about how it looks is one reason I've decided to give up my Spydie Civilian and Matriarch's. That, and I came to the realization that they are too specialized, not being able to penetrate adequately. "Specialization is for insects." Following the Kasper school of thought on this, we are trying to accomplish enough intense pain to make him slow him down (if not stop), (along with the obvious, bleeding or short-circuit the CNS). Cut's dont' cause that much pain, puncture wounds do, espicially to the facial region. Like I said, I'm regurgitating information that makes sense to me. Without a lot of experience, I guess my only option is to rely on you guys that do have experience.

I appreciate all the responses. Nyeti, I think you've got the right idea. Wish I'd discovered this place a couple of years ago, then I would've saved some money buying knife after knife trying to find the right combo. I'll be looking for a small, tough Strider. Then after, be saving the Peso's for an MT for the Warbag.

Thanks guys.

Stay low,

Eric
