Hey,

My mom asked me to put a bug out bag together for her. I have a couple of ideas for what knife to put in, but I'd like some feedback.

1- SAK (Farmer, Soldier, whatever..)
2- Mora
3-Byrd Meadowlark

Whaddaya think?

It's kinda hard to say without knowing what else is going in the kit. If you are putting some sort of multitool or small hand tools (screwdrivers, can opener, etc), then any of them would be fine. Also, depending on where you are and how she will be carrying the bag, there may be some legal issues of the slipjoint vs. lockblade vs. fixed blade that you may need to consider.

Personally, I would go with a Victorinox Explorer or Outrider. The phillips and the scissors may come in handy, and the lock on the Outrider would add a bit of extra safety in oddball situations. I bought a bunch of used Explorers off of eBay cheap to put in all my bags that I setting up.

Absolutely SAK.

Go with the SAK farmer. I might even go with a Super Tinker. It is important that she have a knife, but its probably not all that important that she have two or three. If you want you can put what I call a "kitchen" set together. Include a 3 inch paring knife from Old Hickory or Forcschner along with a camp fork, or spork or something. That way she has a backup but it is more along the lines of a specific tool. I think the simplicity and utility of a Mora or a locking folder are lost on alot of folks anyway, summed up in the phrase "what do you need more than one knife for?"
If she is a knife person by all means get her all three!

What's a bug out bag?

What's a Bob?

What the heck is going on here?

BOB is short for bug out bag...a bug out bag is just a bag full of stuff that you keep in case of an emrgency, like filled with food, water, a knife is good, a flashlight, maybe a book, some tools, and so on, lets say there is a natural disaster, you have a bag you cna grab and use to survive elsewhre...Or somethginto have if the power goes out, the term bon is loosly given when reffering to a bag full of goodies, lol, some guys say bob for their bag they use almost every day, others make a bag and leave it for an emergency, and everything in between...

Ha ha, I meant that I would choose One of the listed knives for her, not all three. The best bushcraft knife of the three is the Mora. The SAK is multi-function, but the non-locking blade is a concern. I could always choose a locking SAK. I listed the Byrd because it is a good cheap folder.
The BOB will contain no supplementary tools, aside from a P-38 can opener.
I'll swing by the outfitter store when she comes to town next month and see which SAK would fit the purpose.
My favorite is the Soldier, but not too many tools on it.

Thanks for the help.

Steve

The mora is the best knife for cuttign purposes, but a SAK might be a bit more effitient because of the extra tools and the small package...So takes up less room in the bag and serves a few different purposes...But if your just looking for a knife, get a mora, can't beat it and so cheap too...Or...just get a mora and a sak!
