Hi, I'm shopping for a knife for my Christmas present; let me tell you my criteria and maybe you experts can give me some ideas:
Made in USA. Repeat, must be made in USA.
Folder
Single blade
Usually prefer lockback.
Must be 3.5-4.25 inch long when closed
I like S30V steel, but would accept others
Smooth edge--absolutely not serrated
Prefer drop point blade, but will consider others.
I would like a nice material for the scales (prefer natural like bone, wood, horn, but might take G10 or carbon fiber).
Up to $300.

My favorite knives which I've carried over the years include:
Spyderco Leaf Storm
Buck Lux with the carbon fiber handle
Case Sodbuster Junior with CV carbon steel blade and black polysomething scales
Boker Top Lock
Lone Wolf Angelo (I lost this one a few years ago; still crying about it!)

Thanks for your help!

Are there any knife lock styles that you don't like? do they all work, but the lockback is your favorite?

Case Tony Bose spearpoint. Comes with several choices of scales.

I might get that...but I somewhat prefer a locking blade. Still, that is a great knife and I am a fan of Case knives. Thanks for the tip.

I think that the Spyderco Military may be of some interest to you also If Traditionals and slip joints are your thing check out Great Eastern Cutlery they make fine slipjoints that are well under your price range.

1. Spyderco Native
2. Spyderco Manix 2
3. BM Griptilian
4. BM 15020

Not in any order

Not out yet, so you'd have to look around for a preorder.

That Native is gorgeous! I've edc'd mine for 4 or 5yrs now and love it. I couldn't give it up for sentimental reasons but I REALLY like that one.

My first thought was a Queen Mountain Man lockback, but it is a little larger than what you're looking for at 4 1/2". Otherwise the D2 is comparable in edge holding to S30V, provided you have the means to put a good edge on it. Something else to look at is Great Eastern Cutlery's #72 lockback pattern. It's available in a variety of handle materials with a few different blade choices. They do a very good job with their 1095. There are also some single blade #73 Scout models that have liner locks and more of a drop point blade.

A Canal Street Pinch has D2 and is in your size range, but it has a slender clip blade. If I'm not mistaken, they also make the new Kabar Dog's Head version of this knife with 440C.

I think I have to say "no" to the Great Eastern knives; I had a bad experience with a liner lock buffalo scales knife (Northfield brand name) from them. First try, the pin holding the shield wasn't trimmed; it stuck into the inside of the knife and scraped the blade. Second one, the backspring was incredibly strong--I used a benchtop beltsander to thin out the back of the knife which helped. This was 3 years ago though...anyone had good recent experiences with them?

Canal Street...I've got their little 2 bladed ring folder in A2 steel I think. Great little knife...with one problem--twice now I've had the mainblade bottom out on the backspring which notches the blade. Again, I got this knife a few years ago...anyone have any newer experience with them?

That Canal Street Pinch does look awesome though...maybe I'll go for that. I see it at AGR for a Ben Franklin.
