Hello! I'm looking to get a new knife for my dad. He doesn't really need one, and it's not his birthday or anything, but I want to get him a new one just because. Problem is, while he appreciates anyone giving him something, he's very picky about the knives he carries and uses, and I need your help finding him one that he will really like. These are the criteria:

-Light and thin, it can't be a lump in his pocket or be too heavy
-Sturdy and tough, I want to get him a knife he can use and abuse
-No pocket clip or anything, he just doesn't like them
-No fancy bone or anything, if it's too fancy looking he won't carry it for fear of messing it up or losing it
-Preferably with a lock, he likes lock-backs the best
-Smooth operating, he doesn't like a knife that's too hard to open

I think that's about it. Any ideas?

gec #72 in wood handles, get one from the tidioute branch. Its a lockback, slim, pretty tough for a traditional knife...I would imagine its easier to open than the 73, but I would get someone to confirm it

Yellow cv wharncliffe copperlock from case

Fits your listed criteria, also you don't see them much and would likely be different from the ones be already owns.

If the GEC #72 is a little too dainty, the #42 Missouri Trader is a good option. Same pattern, lockback, a bit more knife but not so massive as a #23.

Light, sturdy, not fancy, lockable, easy open, can take abuse....
OPINEL!!!!
I think a number 6 or 7 is perfect.

I would also recommend the Buck 55 or 501. Great looking, traditional lock back folders.

I would look at one of the GEC Ben Hogans, or the Canal Street Pinch Trapper.

gec's farmer lock #99 fits every criterion as far as I know, I don't have one though, so I don't know how smooth the pull is.

I'll second that!!

A number 6 Opinel is insanely light weight for it's size, drops in a pocket and goes un noticed untill needed, and is about a utilitarian a knife as you will find. Cheap enough to replace easy if messed up, so he won't be afraid to use the heck out of it. You can never go wrong with an Opinel.

I am perfecting a one hand opening technique with mine, would say its pretty smooth and fits the OP's criteria. I am a huge fan of mine and the steel is an upgrade in my humble opinion. Get a black one for your dad and I know he will get years of use and abuse from it. I dont hesitate to use mine for anything.

I would go with the pocket bushman by cold steel. It has a removable pocket clip (not sure why you would want to take it off) It will last him years of rough use, way more than a lockback ever will. Worth more that you pay. Just my two cents.

@Rockgolfer - thanks for the info, I need to pick up one of F&F tools one of these days
