Hey guys, I know I got your help in getting a knife for my father a few months ago (went with the Benchmade Presido 2) now its time for a Christmas knife for my father in law.

He's not super into knives but after seeing my mini grip he took me out to the shed and showed me all of his fathers knives and there were probably 100 knives...all traditional style knives and I wasn't familiar with any of them except one. He had a knife that he said he actually carried around for awhile it was branded KA-BAR but it looked exactly like a Buck 110.

He said he's been wanting to get it fixed for a long time but from what I could tell it looked like the scales were broken near the spine and it had other damage to it. I'm thinking about getting him a new Buck 110 for Christmas so he can carry around something he actually enjoyed having.

I'm a bit confused though Cabelas has a Buck 110 with a lighter tone scales for $50 with a leather sheath: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Buck...VFCOBCh3jQAnJEAQYASABEgJ9kfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

and Walmart has a Buck 110 with darker scales and a condura sheath for $27:

My question (TL;DR): Is the only difference between these two knives the sheaths? For half the price i'm obviously considering the Walmart version, but I was wondering if maybe the Cabelas one is real wood and the Walmart is not? To my knowledge neither are real wood anymore? Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Unless the Cabelas version was made using a higher grade steel (other than 420HC), they are the same except for the handle material and the sheaths. Cabelas was never known for being "cheap", but I really like my Buck 192 fixed blade with the leather sheath (part of their pro wildlife series as I recall). You paid a premium for the steel and sheath.

Should basically be the same.
I'd get it from Walmart, but it's up to you.

Now if you think he'd want something a little more pocket friendly I'd go with the 501.

I love my 110, here it is after about 4 years.

Btw there are members here such as glenbadd who could probably fix that knife up and even put some nice scales on it if you wanted to go this route.

The leather sheath IMO is way better then the nylon. Just saying.

Also, Instead of going the big box store route, you can go through a site supporting knife retailer like CopperandClad ($42.99+); or DLTtrading or knifeworks which both offer engraving services to give the gift a personalized touch, and still get the same $50 / leather sheath 110 while supporting a community retailer who also helps support this site, as well as supporting small business instead of large corporations.

I don’t know what your budget is but check out great eastern cutlery. They have some reasonable priced traditional knives that are beautiful.

Ill look into the 501.
Neither 110 is made of real wood scales anymore right?

The difference is the sheath, the nylon sheath is just fine IMO and you can get an 110 sheath for about $13 at the big site, not an extra $23.

I'd definitely go with the leather sheath if you can ( may have to check a sporting goods store if your Walmarts only have the nylon sheath )
Its just preference, but traditional and nylon don't really belong together.

I second this. One not mentioned here that I really like is Knifecenter.

Don't forget shipping.... In my opinion, the difference isn't worth worrying about and there are other establishments that sell the 110. I would want to get the one that I would be most proud giving as a present.

$13 includes the shipping, but whatever floats your boat.

The Buck 112 is a little smaller and a lot more pocket friendly, doesn't need a sheath.

For what it is worth, Bass Pro Shops has the Buck 110 with a leather sheath on sale for $35.00 I ordered mine but they are on back-order. Sale good till 12th I believe, but don't quote me.
