One of my buddies joined the National Guard and was looking for a knife. He's specified a 3 inch (+ or - .25 inch) folding knife that is under $100. Here's what I've come up with so far:

Benchmade
-555 mini-grip
-556 mini-grip drop point
-705
-773 Osbourne
-824 mini-ascent II
Camillus:
-EDC
EKI
-Mini-CQC7
SOG
-mini x-ray vision
Spyderco
-delica
-native
-calypso Jr.

Opinions on these knives? What have I missed?

of all of those I would suggest one of the mini-griptillians b/c they combine overall strength, a strong lock and the most comfortable handles for an actual working knife.

Couldn't there be a US army knife??? How come Switzerland gets so much glory?

Must be getting late...:o :barf:

Oops... Oh yeah:

Perhaps the native would be best if he is limited to 3". The Spyderco C-13P Pro-grip SS or plain Pro-Grip looks even better. I don't know if he cares about SS glare or not, but the steel body could be nice and also has VG-10 steel blade.

Spyderco Military is good knife but has 4" blade.

Benchmade
-555 mini-grip
-556 mini-grip drop point (The 440C they use on the Griptilians holds a good edge and is really easy to sharpen. I dont like the texturing on the handles though, a little too grippy)
-705 (Nice G-10 Handles, strong yet slim knife)
-773 Osbourne (I have no experience with this knife, but I really like the Osbourne 940 and they look similar)
-824 mini-ascent II (Alot like the Spyderco Delica, Only I like the delica alot better)
Camillus:
-EDC (Very nice, slim knife that would be easy to carry. Great value!)
EKI
-Mini-CQC7 (Nice and strong, has a beefy blade and super strong handle)
SOG
-mini x-ray vision (I had the Full sized X-Ray Vision. benchmade's axis lock is much better than SOG's arc-lock. The clip is no good, bends easily. The handle had way too much flex.)
Spyderco
-delica (very nice lightweight, less expensive knife. Cuts very well and has one of the best steels out of all your choices- VG-10)
-native (Nice knife also. very good steel, but the handle is alot fatter that the delica. the hole is also partially covered by the handle when the blade is closed. Many consider this one of the best smaller Spydercos, but I dont like it as much as the delica)
-calypso Jr. (Get one if you can find it. they are discontinued and getting hard to find. This knife has many, many fans. People love this knife. It has a great steel, great handle shape, and because of the way the blade is ground it cuts better than all of your other choices)

Hope this helps some!:)

Thanks to all who have responded; Leather, I forgot about an SAK (DOH!). Philtygeezer, I'm going to check into the Pro Grip (can't do the military because it's out of the 3" range). K man, thanks for all the imput on the knives (I kinda figured the AXIS was better than the ARC, but wasn't going jump the gun since I have no experiece with SOG).
