I'm trying to get a firefighter friend of mine a knife for when he is off duty. He has a ParaMilitary and carries a Hinderer Gerber Rescue when on the job.
I'm thinking of either a Spyderco Assist or Salt
Off duty you tend not to want to be reminded of work. So I'd look for something that isn't "rescue-cool". Perhaps a nice slippie of some kind. Any EDC type would be OK I think.
If he wants something rescue friendly, I love my CS Land & Sea Rescue folder. It's 4", though beefier than the pics would lead one to believe. http://www.coldsteel.com/29rls.html
I'm a believer that "Once a First Responder, always a First Responder".
With that in mind, how about a Victorinox Swiss Army Rescue Tool with stay-glow yellow scales; or a Vic Swiss Army One-hand Fireman Lockblade. In addition to one-hand opening & locking main blade, both have seat-belt cutters plus a basic set of SAK tools.
Is this a "utility" knife, or a "tactical" knife????
I am an Emmerson guy, but I imagine you probably don't want to spend that much money! Just in case, for utility the 10, 12, or 13 are my preference, and for self-defense the Combat Karambits.
Depends on what he wants to do on his day off... lot's of guys I work with carry simple 2 blade folders (case style, etc.). Of course we are some good ole simple country boys, so that may have something to do with it
Hmm, he wasn't really fond of the SAK Rescue tool
Days off, he just rides his bike or motorcycle and bum out at social clubs, etc
He likes stuff, but simple and non gimmicky
