Im going to be going to afghanistan in the fall and i want to bring an emerson with me.

I originally inteded to bring my satin finish cqc-7 but then started thinking about a commander or maybe an 8. I just dont know if i can justify the expense.

Am i missing out greatly by not buying a commander or 8?

if you would want to take a different folder with you what emerson would you take?

im also taking a rat izula a rat 4 and a leatherman but i want a sturdy folder to slide into my pocket and i want it to be an emerson mainly because of the postive experience ive had with my karambit.

thanks for any suggestions.

hey razordescent, im serving in the Hungarian Defense Forces and i would bring the 8' to Afghanistan. the best of both words, great slicer, and great ability to penetrate, good grip and wave. COOL STUFF!

The 7 is also a great all rounder but the 8 has a better grip. maybe you shoud take a look on the super 7:D

Take Care and Good Luck!

maybe if you could find a blackbird. they are my favorite. i took my cqc7b and it was just fine. never messed with the 8.

I say go for the 8, its a nice "big" knife that can manage pretty much all things with no problems.

The commander is great too but keeping a recurve sharp can be a problem for some
folks, especially on the fly and I find recurves are not the best blades for a large range for tasks, like the 8, 10 12 etc would be.

The 7 is the classic of classics when it comes to Emersons and is again a great knife
but once again the blade shape limits you a bit.

The 8 was/is carried by a group of the British special forces and they seem to do OK :)

well, im getting engaged before i go, i guess if i have the money left over after the enegagement ring ill buy an 8. the commander seems to be really popular in some circles but the 8 really does appeal to me. i dont really feel underknifed with the 7 but i know im eventually gually gonna buy an 8 or a commander. you guys have swayed me over to the 8 though.

thanks for the help.
