This is everyone's favorite kind of post... suggesting knives for people

I'm looking for a lightweight, fairly aggressive knife to wear while I'm running. I've been using an Endura, but this particular knife has been through a lot and may be close to retirement.

Primary use will be defense, either from loose dogs, or other goblins that try to prey on joggers. Slash and run to the nearest phone will be the preferred method.

I'm thinking about getting a Spyderco merlin/harpy but I wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking anything.

Maybe you should consider a neck knife: Dozier makes some gr8 ones, but a Ti version from Livesay can be even better - and more cost effective...

Another solution can be attaching it to a gloved hand - inside the glove - fast and easy to reach.

already have a neck knife.. Emerson LaGriffe. I really like it but I don't like it bouncing around while I'm running.. Plus it's going to get really really sweaty underneath my shirt. Most of my training thus far has revolved around drawing from my right hip, so I'd like to stick with that if possible.

thanks for the suggestion though. I'll think about the glove thing when it gets colder.

Tom,

I don't think tht I can suggest a knife per se, but maybe the right question is 'which carry system?' I used to run a lot, and would think that a neck carry would jostle around a good deal. Maybe something with a clip or suspension system similar to what you're used to, with one-hand-opening capability?

Good luck,

Mike

I've wondered about this too. I know you will all hate this, but what about one of those plastic personal defense knives? They're about $5 apiece and I saw one stuck into a 2x4 at the last show I went to.

Just wondering.

Okay, this might sound a little bit like overkill, but Mission K&T should be unveiling the smaller version of their MPF very shortly. Yes it's an expensive folder, but think for a second about the positives:

-all titanium construction means that the folder will be lightweight (as compared to a steel bladed folder), yet it will be incredibly strong and it won't bounce around as much while clipped in your waistband

-all titanium construction also means that you could completely soak the knife with your salty sweat everday for a hundred years and never have to worry about any corrosion problems whatsoever

-the MPF's integral framelock (like the Sebenza or Apogee) is one of the strongest and most reliable locks available

-the clip on the MPF is strong and secure

If you can get over the sticker shock, it sounds to me like a match made in heaven

Tom,

Part of the problem here ~ knives don't have legs! No wonder your Endura is close to retirement!

But, Spyderco's are probably the best knife for running! The hole in the blade is perfect for attaching a leash......

No matter how you cut it (no pun intended) but it's still gonna be hell on any knife as you're draggin' it down the road behind ya!

Isn't that considered knife abuse?

I would suggest the BM AFCK or the mini-AFCK, deacent knives at a good price. Those are the knives I carry when I am out jogging, and I am quite satisfied.

Good luck searching!

Berserk..
AFCK is too heavy for me... or atleast for the shorts I wear... in the pocket, it flops around... don't like to tuck it into the waistband because I always poke myself with the handle.

Thanks to all who've answered so far.

I thought about that too for a while. My problem is not the dogs (hey, cutting them just makes them more aggressive!) but all kinds of winding, thorny plants covering the narrow trails I use. For my purposes the Spyderco Military in the serrated version is excellent. It is very light for it's size so it doesn't bounce around a lot. Besides that it's flat and you can wear it comfortably clipped to the waist band of your shorts slightly left of your right pelvis bone. Opening is easy even with wet fingers and with the long handle you get good leverage for slashing motions. This tool fills all vines with terror! And when whacking doesn't help on harder plants, you can saw them with the serration. Very nice! Rust is no problem either. You just have to keep the knife clean.

I have also done a lot of running while carrying an endura. I personally have found that the endura is a little too heavy, and large to wear with certain running shorts. I refuse to wear anymore clothing than I have to in the summer. I switched to my delica, and thought that was about perfect, than I switched to a micarta handled calypso jr, and have no complaints at all. I think you are definately thinking along the right lines with the harpy or merlin, definately stick with a smaller lightweight spyderco. they are perfect for working out.

Endura too heavy??? You must be a runner (read: you wear those VERY thin and light nylon shorts). I carry an older (plastic clip) Endura IWB when I work out or do anything active. I do quite a bit of trail running, and when I wear it I don't even notice it's there!

Since I make knives,I carried a small Claw neck knife for awhile. But , like mentioned above,It bounced and was subject to abuse from perspiration.I now carry a Matriarch clipped to the front waistband. It is just to the left of my navel since I am left handed. You can substitute a new model Merlin.Front carry is important, especially if you run with headphones. This size knife does not bounce or interfere with your running stride.Remember, if you are attacked while running, you will already be winded. The claw type blades provide ready access ,and can give you a chance to slash and "run" away.

While running this summer I have carried an Emmerson LaGriffe- No bouncing problem as the cord goes under my Heart rate monitor. The blade will get sweaty, so cleaning it off, and letting the sheath dry out and tuff cloth are important. Have also carried an older black bladed Endura- that has been plenty light, and has stayed put while trail running- knife is clipped so the handle is in the waist band.

My favorite knife to wear while running is the Spyderco Delica (older version). It's very light, and can definitely fill the bill if defending yourself.
The smaller, lightweight spydercos seem to be the perfect for wearing with workout clothes when you don't want the bouncing of a neck knife.

I carry a full size BM AFCK IWB when running and don't ever seem to have a problem with it poking me or anything... and I wouldn't recommend inside the pocket carry as drawing and opening the knife quickly becomes difficult...
As a side note about the shorts - I like umbro soccer shorts with a drawstring. The drawstring makes it possible to carry any clip knife IWB easily... As a matter of fact, I've even carried my Glock27 in a uncle mike's sidekick holster in the small of the back while biking in umbro shorts - simply by making the drawstring support the weight...

I usually pack a CS Voyager (4"), either clip or tanto. the clip and elastic waistband hold it firmly; the flat configuration makes it unobtrusive. Holds a good edge, opens easy like an old Zippo.

I carried a BM CQC7 in the waist but it is heavy and lack of smooth surfaces and edges made it uncomfortable. I live in Detroit and dogs are the least of my worries! Whatever problem I face running, I feel it is to my advantage to keep it as far from me as possible (since I dont run with the Glock.45). For that I palm carry a small can of industrial strength pepper spray. The fogger type, not the weak stream squrit gun style. I now have a MT mini SOCOM in the waistband, very light! I used to think a knife could dispatch a dog until I witnessed a trained German Shep. attack dog. There are actually packs of stray dogs that roam (hunt!) here...I didn't believe it but people have been attacked! And some of these dealers have mean Pitbulls...have you ever been chased by a Pitbull? There is no time to go for that folder in the shorts, but a low tree branch can be a real friend. A good kick to the chops works too!

I just want to start off by saying that im no runner , to much work for me

The wife is tho and she likes the microtech udt with her custom concealex sheath. She clips the sheath on the back of her shorts. The sheath stays nice and snug and at a great position if the time comes to use it. www.tactical-knives.com
