Alright here's the story. I'm going into the marines as an 0311. My stepbrother currently is in the army as infantry and he carries a cold steel gurhka kukri and a strider smg. heres the problem. he's 5 inches taller than me and 60 pounds heavier. I'm trying to get my knives out of the way BEFORE i go in because i have the money to do it now and i figured it'd be easier. my other 2 friends that are in the navy and the marines carry a cold steel recon scout and the other one carries a cold steel voyager.
any tips? should I just wait? if you served what'd you carry?
thank you :)

Busse, Scrapyard, Swamp rat, make'em jealous :)

Take a look at the Benchmade Nimravus, good length not too large or small and should fit on you nicely if you're not as big as your bro. Also- plenty of carry and mounting options, MOLLE and soforth. They do deals for military I think as well. Happy knife hunting and thank you for your service

First...Thank you for stepping up and enlisting.
Second...I agree with the "just wait" folks. You have a lot to accomplish ahead of you and you should concentrate on that. Its hard enough leaving your girlfriend/wife behind when you're at boot camp but knowing that your new blade is sitting there all alone without you...damn!
I teach Marines "things" for a living and once you're in you get a better feel for what your battalion/company is carrying. Handle some of theirs then use your first military discount on whatever blade you want. My 2 cents.

alright man makes sense
whatcha teach marines?

Just hold off until you are done with boot and buy an XM-18 or something nice like that.

They won't let you have it in boot, and even if they did, your butt will be dragging and you won't even be thinking about your knife.

Stay safe, stay sharp.

When I'm in the field I like a cheap folder that I wouldnt worry about losing, and a basic multi tool. With all the gear you're gunna have in your pack and strapped on your flak, you really aren't going to want another big hunk of metal to hang off it.

I carried a cheapo ka-bar folder and a dummycorded leatherman skeletool for field ex's at TBS. Never felt like I needed anything more, you've always got your e-tool anyway. In the future when I get back to the ground side I'll probably carry a small fixed blade like the ESEE HEST instead of or in addition to the folder.

Good luck at boot camp, are you going to San Diego or the Island?

do you have and experience with the xm-18?
I remember when my brother went to basic he was soooo mad because he couldnt dip during it.

how long have you been in for by the way?
I live in delaware so I get to go to the island

lax11, I'm a firearms instructor, empty hand fighting techniques and other assorted fun stuff. Its a tough job but someone has to do it! :)
Good luck and enjoy boot camp as much as you can, it will be one of your best memories down the road.

I'm actually really excited for boot camp. I have six brothers that are all older than me so I thought it was amusing after my oldest brother got out of bootcamp he was like "look. if you survived us wailing on you, making fun of you for being colorblind, and playing hockey with us then you'll do fine."

Don't need to see colors well to kick in doors haha. I had to be a "seeing eye Lieutenant" for a color blind Marine at TBS. The boxes we had to find were red, in the woods with a green background. So I just had to walk around with this guy and tell him whenever I saw a box. Pretty sure he ended up failing cus he went with the first box I saw every time, regardless of the distance we had gone.

Your gonna love it! I wasn't a Marine, just Army infantry. Hold off on a knife purchase. Find out what you're allowed to carry when you get downrange to your line unit. I never carried a fixed blade. During most of my tour in the sandbox, I carried a MT D/A Socom.

my recruiter was like your colorblind? it don't matter you good with a gun?

My family and friends were the worst. I wore a pink and white hockey and lacrosse helmet instead of red and white for 5 years, my lacrosse stick had green mesh instead of red, and the constant "hey what colors this"

its the most annoying disability cause its the only real one you can make fun of and nobody cares if you made a retard joke in public they'd hang you but colorblindness is hilarious.
