done several search on personal survival kits, one of the must have item is off course a knife. of those that i look at a folding knife is recommended, probably because of its relatively small size, it can be place in an Altoid tin. can a neck knife be a feasible choice? i have a mini-pitbull by Timberline that can probably fit into the kit that i am building, so do you think is a good idea.
thanks

Personally I have carry a CRKT neck peck in my mini kit, however it is in a small Plano tackle box since it would not fit in the Altoids tin with the sheath. I do not think the Mini Pitbull will either but I have only seen the details and photos.

However on the positive side you don't have to worry about the lock failing on your fingers.

Mate, look at the small SAK knives. They will
offer wide choice of implments that will be
required by a survival situation. Simple
and to the point is always best. Leave the fancy
named stuff to the wannbe "woodsman".

I have a Mission MPD Ti. I like the solid simple strength of a small fixed blade. 7" overall, 2.5 oz. totally rustproof. and sometimes a little longer to sharpen; but they make them in A2 as well I think.

Cheers,
Hal

I stashed a victorinox classic in my mini kit. Fits great and leaves lots of room for everything else.

Lets look at this from another angle. Why not have a large enough knife to use in a wilderness survival situation and have a small "kit" in the pouch on the sheath. I have several kits I have put together over the years in traveling around the world.

One of the least expensive consists of a 12" machete bought in SA. Locally made leather scabbard with pouch for wet stone, SAK, Magnesium rod. 14' of 550 cord braided into sling. The sheath was dunked into a pot of hot bees wax and hand rubbed. Everything included cost under $25.00. Of course that was a few yaers ago. :D

I'm not able to ramble around like I used to so everything has been in storage. I think it's time to pull them out and check the condition of the kits. Just for tome good memories.

Cheers,

BMW, Your take on the ideal equipment is ideal.
However, it misses a key point that is all common
in the civilized world. The ablity to have it always at hand.:(

Urban living what it is nowdays a small pocketable
kit is about the best we can hope for in a true
survival situation. In an "outdoor" settings then
the kit you discribe would , for me , be a
requirement before leaving the paved road.

Always try to be aware of where you are and adjust
your equipment to the environment as best you can.

Tightwad,
My Urban survival kit is always at hand. It fits in my ME recon pack or the briefcase,

1. Kit Carson U2
2. Leatherman
3. Outdoor reasearch 1st aid kit with extras
4. Mini Mag light w/ spare bateries & bulbs
5. Spaceblanket
6. two Large plastic leaf bags
7. folding cup
8. Katadin water purifier
9. 30' 550 paracord
10. Ductape
11. small radio
12. small spool of fishing line
13. Evacuate mask
14. notepad with extra pens
15. Ziplock bags
16. Diebetic supplies
17. Power bars/gum
18. 2 bandanas
19. two disposable lighters
20. couple of snaplinks.

These items do not fill up my Haliburton briefcase or recon bag. I have traveled with these items or similar for over 10 years.

I have tried and used most of the commercial pocket survival/storm kits that have been sold for the last 25 years. They have ranged from mediocre to worthless. If you are going for low speed, low profile get a good SAK or pocket multi tool. Braid a little 550 cord and wear it around your wrist. Carry a minimag or one of the new LED mini lights. If you want a good straight utility knife I suggest you look at the Boker economy model of Bud Neely.

The single eged razor blades(or double edged broken in half....) but the best blade I've found was off a cheap knockoff (about $5 )....of a swiss card.......I think it was from BUD-K....but it was serrated, cut well,etc.....
