Hey, guys new to the forum but not to spyderco i currenty own a military and i think it is by far the best knife i've owned i have had it for about 2yrs now and very pleased. Now for my question, i wanted to know how hard the serrated Spyderco S.P.O.T is to sharpen than the plain edge, also do ya'll think this is a good choice for her to put in the car or purse. thanks in advance

My wife will carry a Rescuer on trips if I ask her to, but only because of the cool name.

My girlfriend carries a SS Cricket, girls seem to like the cricket, even though it is reverse s.

If it's for "defense" I suggest a fixed blade. I've seen way to many "better halves" fumble around with folding knives or semiauto handguns to recommend either to someone who isn't an enthusiast.

I got my wife a Griptillian with a blue handle. She likes it. She is left handed and it is a very easy knife to open and close with either hand, and not as tactical looking as many other knives.

Howzabout a mini Dyad. Has both plain and serrated blades and has alot of cutting edge in a small package.

From a woman's point of view, sharp serrations aren't the issue. A knife is a very personal choice - for anyone, man or woman. If you can, take your wife to a shop with a good selection and let her handle different knives. Each person is different, but one thing that is constant, regardless of the purpose for carrying, if your not comfortable with it, you won't reach for it. For me personally, my favorite EDC is my SS ATR. Although, it's usually carried with at least one or more other models (Poliwog, Black Bladed Native, 83mm Manix, Delica or others).

The point is, she might surprise you. Either way, if she is able to choose the model, she'll be more likely to use it and hopefully come to appreciate it.

I agree with what TazKristi said!! Take her to a knife shop with a good selection of knives, and let her pick one out. I bet she WILL surprise you with what she likes! And I am happy to know that I am not the only woman around here that carries more than one knife!! :O)

Taz is right. I tried to buy for the wife and picked up a Kershaw Chive. She didn't like it. Got here a Spyerco Calypso Jr. She didn't like it. I tried several others and they are all in the safe. Then on her own one day she spots the Poliwog and of course it isn't even mine I just had it from a friend that allowed me to check it out. I talked him out of it and she now carryies it daily. Go figure. I'd have never even picked that one for her at all.

My Lady has a small battery of knives to choose from. The stainless harpy SE was her first choice for a long while - serious cutting in a small package (if you can find a Merlin it might be a nice alternative for your Lady due to decreased weight).

She also carries a stainless Cricket PE EVERYWHERE in her purse.

Of late, the Blue Almite Walker has been her EDC of choice, though she continues to keep her Dodo PE handy as well.

I agree completely with TazKristi - take your Lady to the shop and let her choose what feels comfortable in her hands. My Lady chose what she wanted from my collection and carries them daily (though the Dodo was actually ordered for her from the outset at her request). Had I made the decision for her which knives to carry I doubt she would carry one at all.

I got my wife a Dodo for Christmas, and she loves it! She takes it with her everywhere, especially when we go see scary movies ;)

Even at a knife shop my wife couldn't find one to suit her. So I took a old frn clip Delica to her and I said tell me what you want. Then I took it to the shop and cut the clip off and I ground the blade to suit what she wanted. It had to fit a small compartment in her purse so I had to modify the handle too. It is kind of a ugly little sucker now but she is happy with it.

My better half has been carrying a Spydie Navigator for the last 7 years. She loves it. Small enough to carry easily and hide/take anywhere... designed to perform like a MUCH larger knife. She likes it so much I bought her another one as a back-up.

I gave my wife a Cricket upon which Vess, a BFC member, had done some file work and she just loves it.

My wife-to be just got a delica from me, after she took the chive (great knife, but tiny). I'd been wanting to get a delica, finally, but I think it's too small for me. She had said that she liked the endura, but it was too big, so it was a pretty clear choice.

I wouldn't recomend a knife at all for self defense for a woman if she is not into them. Better option would be some good mace. If you just want her to have a good knife that might be better than nothing sort of thing in a SD situation, check out a Calypso Jr. I have never seen anyone not like one after trying it in person. Could be a slasher if needed and I have no doubt that it would cut a persons meat just as fast as it would cut a box or a steak.

The blade just seems to glide through stuff and at the end of a wildly swinging hand of a scared woman, it might just rearrange some facial features on an attacker. It is a 2 1/2" razor blade with a handle that is big enough to grip yet the knife doesn't look like a tactical in any way.

I agree with TK 100%. I was very suprised when my wife said her favorites is my PE CF Civilian, and my Persian!

I would have thought a pink Cricket or Ladybug!

Yes, she also has some good old Mace that I bought her, too!;)
