So im leaving for Ghana in a few weeks. Flying into Accra and then staying with my cousin who is a volunteer in a small fishing village for a week. Im taking my partially serrated Emerson A-100, my edc Black Spyderco Paramilitary 2, and a Sog Multi tool. Im thinking about throwing in a fixed blade. Nothing will be for any type of defensive use. I will be staying in a very primitive enviroment for a week and they will probably end up getting used alot more than they are used here. Im taking a crock stick for edge maintenance. If I could find an Emerson PUK fixed blade I would definitely take it but I cant so I am asking for recommendations for and easy to sharpen 3 to 5 in blades and a kydex sheath. Im thinking about the Tops Key d, ESEE rc 3, or Becker Necker with the micarta handles. Any advice is appreciated.

The Military and multitool together should be more than enough. Keep in mind that things going missing from luggage is more common in parts of Africa (not sure about Ghana in particular) so don't bring anything you wouldn't be able to handle losing. When I went to South Sudan I kept it very simple and just took a Gerber multitool and left my expensive knives, gadgets (other than a laptop), jewelry, etc at home. I didn't have to worry about pickpockets or about anything I owned attracting the wrong kind of attention and, if I got mugged or my luggage got rifled, there was nothing to worry about having taken. The only exception was the laptop, but that was either with me at the UN compound or locked in the hotel safe.

Whatever you take along plan to leave it with someone who you meet who is not expecting anything but would appreciate a good knife to use. While Ghana is not the poorest nation in Africa the percentage of people who live on the margins is going to be very high compared to life in North America or Europe.

I have no plan to bring any of it back. I am taking two folders and two multitools so I have one in each bag. The goal is to make it there with at least one of each. Whatever fixed blade ill get one for each bag and leave both there.

Nicely planned Fletcher.357. Make sure you post up some pics of the knives in use once you're back. The thought of leaving the blades behind is a great idea Willseeyalater, and is one I wish I'd thought of when over on the continent.

^ Noted.

. . . Take nothing which would break your heart to lose.

OR another way to look at it is for something to leave behind as "Thank You" gifts to your hosts/guides/new friends.

Some budget-friendly but functional blades off the top of my head -

Inexpensive but historic Russel Green Rivers (REALLY cheap)

Cold Steel's Bushman or smaller Pendleton Hunter

Mora Companion (hi-viz orange lessens the chance of losing it)

And any of Condor's offerings. The Rodan for example.

Cold Steel Bushman. It's rugged, it's cheap, it'll hold an edge, and it's one of the strongest hollow handled knives around. You can stuff the handle full of supplies, or make a spear out of it. Comes in two blade styles, mine is the bowie Bushman.

I'd take a few Mora fixed blades. They will be much appreciated there. Before reading your entire post, my initial thought was a Vic SAK. I would not go to any foreign country without one. Might even take a spare.

I wouldn't take any expensive knives. You may need a knife, but a SAK will probably do ya.
