Hey guys this summer I will be going on a 6 week expedition into the Koobi Fora forest in Kenya on an anthropological dig. I would like to bring a large heavy fixed blade to keep with me, for protection and use. I love knives and this is the perfect excuse to spend some money one one. Any suggestions??
Thanks!

My recommendation would be a Chris Reeve Shadow I. It's the most robust hollow-handle fixed blade on the planet, incredibly tough, and was invented in South Africa (not Kenya, but at least on the same continent).

I actually took a RD9 with me, it was perfect, not to heavy, chopped very well, I skinned some game with it. Rolled logs in the fire, all I took to sharpen it was a diamond hone, only used it once after splitting logs and making dinner. It was fairly inexpensive and not worried if it got taken or broken. i still have it, though it doesn't see much use besides abusing the hell out of it. I think they are the best for the money, not real pretty, but functional.

I was in several parts of South Africa, hunting and exploring. I had a blast.

Look at the Ritter RSK FB in S30V. It is one tough blade with comfy G10 scales. Costs less than a custom or a CRK model without sacrificing quality or utility. Give it a look ... ! :D

Hey Guys...

When in Africa,, do as the Africans do..
bring a big Assed Machette...

A Machette is a Very popular tool/weapon there,, so there must be a reason for using them...

and then bring a Ranger RD series for good measure..

I am from South Africa so my cent's worth. If you are using a Panga (bush knife) you need only take a small fixed blade ( I use a Schrade Old Timer Trailblazer) and your SAK in your pocked. Just keep an eye open on your kit as it may go missing. Trust no one to carry your baggage. Don't foreget malaria tabs. Enjoy your trip!!
