No, the title does not imply a trade I want to make :D. I'm looking for a new EDC for my wife (she currently carries a Gerber LST...trying to upgrade). Here are the requirements.

Uses - Light cutting of tape, paper, clothing tags, etc.
Style - Slim folder, with or without thumbstud.
Blade Size - No longer than a 2.5 - 2.75 inch blade.
Steel - Pretty much any non-POS steel will work, we're talking only intermittent use.
Blade Finish - Once again, pretty open to suggestions, just no coatings (unless it's Boron Carbide).
Clip - Not necessary, however, if it has one, she wants tip-down carry. She will most likely carry it in her purse.
Color - OK, here's her uncompromising requirement -- it must be bright red; not maroon, not pink, but bright red
Scale Material - No strong preferences, although the color requirement probably rules out most natural materials.
Price - Looking for something in $50-$150 range.

So what do you folks think? Does such a knife exist? The closest I've found is this Spyderco at A.G. Russell, but it's a tad too big and the style doesn't really appeal to her.

I fear that you will have a hard time finding her the perfect knife. She may have to compromise, take a look at the Benchmade 690 (hey at least it has red)

You should check out the Kershaw Scallion. It will be out with red aluminum scales in Sept.

Right up until the "bright red" part, I was thinking "Benchmade 450 Park Avenue", but you kinda lost me when you hit the color requirement. :D

forget the red.. you might have to make the scales...
I'll suggest Scallion/Chive or perhaps spyderco salsa ( i think they've different colors)

please excuse me for any typos... i burnt my left index and not very comfortable

mmmm.... spyderco ladybug? thats all I can think of. or you can get a delica trainer and have it reground to a point:)

my wife likes the red handles too lol - i am getting her a M16 CRKT, they make a model for firefighters that has red handles/black blade, i'm sure they have 1 in the size ya want.

some of my wifes fav knives include a AFCK 11 mini PE first prod run, M16-00 CRKT, and a CRKT kasper pro, AFCK is #1, but she wants something w/red handles..

The red firefighter M16s look cool, and the new M18 also comes with red handle scales too, at least I think it does. The M18 sounds like an awesome knife too. I was going to say a Camillus EDC, but the color requirement rules it out. It's an equally awesome knife.

It's a rare woman that likes anything from Spyderco. Just my humble observation.

That said, I just sent money order (for just a tad bit more than your top dollar range listed above) to a custom maker for a 2" blade custom folding knife for my wife.

It will look similar to this:

...but different ;)

Perhaps if you are willing to spend $150, you might consider a custom knife?

You can still get a bright red handle - in fact, you'll be able to get something closer to what you exactly want...just ask for it!

If you want production, there's always the Victorinox line of Swiss Champs...

They're red. ;)

Red...Hmmmm...I am with the ladybug idea. I bought my girlfriend a black one and she loves it.

How about a Benchmade 940 with red handles? I beleive I saw some for sale in the for sale by dealers section.

Thanks for the all the good suggestions everyone. Right now I'm tending towards one of three options: get a WH evolution and make my own red scales for it (do they make bright red linen micarta?), go for the Kellam knife (I think she'd really like the style, but I don't know anything about these knives), or maybe go with the Gerber LTR. We'll see what happens....

I'd like to second fudo's suggestion. You can get a limited edition Benchmade 940 in bright red from New Graham for $106.25. Here's the URL:

A friend of mine just got one of these and it is really a beautiful knife. I have a blue 940 that's one of my favorites.

BTW--I have to disagree with Pendentive about women and Spydercos. My wife and her friends strongly prefer them to more conventional designs. Obviously experiences differ. :)
