Knife for workouts?

I originally posted this in the Spyderco forum. I guess I wasn't really thinking about other brands for some reason. Anyways, I have been hunting for a less expensive, yet still high performing folder for carry during workouts. I will be doing a good bit of running out in the country and need something to have with me just in case it would be come necessary. I would be hunting for something small, and with good steel in it, probably with very good stain resistance. I will most likely carry IWB to keep it descrete, as it will also be likely carried at the gym and occasionally around campus. I have narrowed it down to the Spyderco Calypso Jr. Lightweight(VG-10) and Spyderco Native Lightweight(440V), I like the look of those knives, the size seems right, and I like the way those steels perform. I was hoping I could get some input from y'all on other brands/models as the collective knowledge and experience in here is amazing. I would like to stay in that price range ($45-$50 from online sources) as I don't want to be too pissed if it were to get dropped in the middle of nowhere without my knowledge.

I have had tremendous success in carrying my full size AFCK on my hip, IWB while jogging. The knife is light, and thin enough, and yet still offers substantial aggressiveness, should the situation require it...

I also have carried the UJI FIGHTER by LIVESAY for some time now. The sheath setup with UJI clips makes for one slim, light, ergonomic carrying system.

When I run or lift I carry my old Benchmade mini stryker IWB. I think that just about any knife that is lightweight and has a clip should be ok. Just make sure you hose out the built up sweat and junk out of the action once in a while.

Hey Tique, how about carrying your BM-42 in that neck sheath?

LOL, just kidding.

tique,

I have carried my BM Mini-AFCK IWB during many mountain biking excursions with no problems. I thought for sure that rust/corrosion would be a problem but even during the 95º summer rides I have experienced no problems at all. I would have to say, however, that if you plan on doing a lot of running, weight should be considered if you're planning on carrying your knife IWB, as heavier knives will have a tendency to pull your pants down. Your Spyderco choices would be good, don't forget about the Delica model either, it's a favorite of mine.

Keep in mind that this will also be used running on a college campus, not just out in the country. I can't get away with a neck knife or a fixed blade and I try to stay around 3" or less for blade length on all my carry stuff here.

I would love to carry my 42 in the neck sheath, but if the campus cops didn't try to shoot me, the rest of the people would be so freaked out if I ever pulled it out, they would run and hide whenever they saw me.

One of my BM's would be nice, especially my AFCK, but I don't want to risk dropping it and not noticing. I would hate to lose that knife.

Only problem with the Delica is that it has ATS55, and I'm not terribly fond of that steel. Only blades I have with it are my G10 Harpys and my Civilian(incoming) because there is nothing comparable in another steel.

tique,

Is there anything in particular you don't like about the ATS-55? I find that my Delica outcuts and demonstrates better edge retention than my Mini-AFCK, although this is likely due to a better blade grind. Don't forget about the BM "Ascent" series, either- these might suit you well.

My choice would be the Endura from Spyderco. It is not that expensive in case you lose it, it is light to carry, and big enough to tackle most tasks.

It's not that I really dislike ATS-55, I just like VG-10, 440V, and some others better.

The Benchmade ascent series isn't really what I am looking for, had several, and I think the action sucks on them. They are terribly rough for a lock back IMHO.

The Endura is getting a bit on the large side. I think anything around 3" would handle what I need, and since it is going to be on a college campus, I try to stay well under the 4" mark.

La Griffe.

Perfect size. Perfect carry. Perfect price. Extremely lightweight. Just make sure you Tuff Cloth the sucker if ya sweat a lot...

I don't know about gymnastics, but I have carried a BM 350 BT coated while swimming, body surfing & jogging. The clip is strong the knife is light & I have'nt lost it yet.

I carry an inexpensive Spyderco look-a-like when running. I have been attacked by dogs several times. Chemical sprays just made them more agressive and a stun gun is too unpredictable.

The knife I carry is very light, has about a 3" blade with a thumb stud, a black composition handle with a clip that allows it to ride low low on the waistband of my running shorts. It has a partially scalloped blade. But it is easy to draw and most important it is in a position to open fast without having to turn it around or anything.

The knife I carry, IS legal in the jursidiction where I carry it.

Because it is inexpensive I don't have to worrry about losing or breaking it.

I have had to draw it, even open it a couple of times (after trying to resolve the situation in less aggressive ways of course) but I have never had to "use" it on a run.

Be prepared, I say.
