Might be heading to the middle east. Anybody who has been there got any advice? Sorry can't be more specific where.

Small Swiss Army Knife, big multitool. The Leatherman Chartge Ti actually has a blade of 154-CM. Their Blast is a more traditional multitool but compact and lighter than the Charge Ti. Both have very complete tool sets.

Compact (3" to 4" to 5") fixed blade may hold up better than a folder. Spyderco Moran or Perrin would be good. Benchmade has reliable fixed blades also, but I'm not personally familiar with them. Anything by Cold Steel in Carbon V is OK.

Depending on your budget for this, the most attractive options will vary. Depending on conditions where you are (shhh ...) going, you may not want to expose an expensive knife to loss, damage, or depredation.

Consider a simple sharpener. One of the DMT or EZE-lap pocket stones would be fine.

Come back safe!

What Esav said. Get a small SAK (Swiss army Knife) and a larger multi-tool like a Leatherman. In addition to a tough multi-tool.

Try to get a multi-grit sharpener.

Lighter? Check out Windmill lighters, the Brunton Helios, and some ferrocium rods(if you can practice them before leaving)

Don't forget your Surefire! - Flashlight

Try to handle your knife and light before you buy.

Oh, stick around hear and look at the older posts, you will (garenteed) find more valuable info. ;)

Americans - with their well-known love of the "Smaller is better" concept ( ;) ) - will recommend that you take a 30" kukri, backed up by a 24" kukri, backed up by a Busse Battle Mistress, backed up by a BK7, backed up by a CS Trailmaster, backed up by a Swamp Rat... You get the picture. An armchair commando can carry anything!

Take a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife with a mix of tools appropriate to your needs.

Take a multitool of the Gerber/Leatherman type.

If you have a definite, identified need for one, take a 2" to 4" locking folder made by a good manufacturer. Names include (in alphabetical order) Benchmade and Spyderco

Take a small torch, preferably LED running on AA cells. (Seriously consider a Petzl head torch).

As to anything else, you don't provide many hints.

Best of luck,

maximus otter
