Knife Gift for a UPS Driver?

My best buddy is a UPS driver. He doesn't know JACK about knives, but I know (and you know) that he needs one.

I'm getting a Waved Endura in the mail next week in a trade, but I wonder if it's too large and if I should trade it for a waved delica for him.

I don't know what the UPS policies are and I've asked and he doesn't seem to know what they are and I don't want to ruin the surprise by outright ASKING him what he's allowed to carry.

For an Xmas present for a UPS driver in Colorado, I can think of nothing better than a good, working-knife, Spyderco, but I don't know if this Waved Endura windfall I'm getting is the right one.

Should I keep it and buy him some other Spyderco?

Anybody know UPS drivers? Any clues?

.

Wouldn't it be suspicious to see a ups driver with a knife or any other kind of box cutting tool on them? Just my thoughts...

I've a friend who's retired UPS management. He says UPS drivers are allowed to carry pocket knives as long as they meet the local definition of "legal." (3" or under blade length was his definition of "legal.") He said many drivers carry "those spring-loaded cutters" (don't know what he meant by that) for removing labels and tags and the like, when the need arises.

A waved Endura, what with its nearly 4" blade and that Evil Lookin' Hook Thingy On Top [tm] might not pass muster, tho, I'm thinkin'.

I sent my friend URLs to pictures of the waved Endura. I'll let you know what he says.

Don't they (UPS drivers) already get a lot of free knives :D

Everybody needs a knife, and I can't see why a UPS driver would have more risk of being hassled by sheeple than anyone else -- less than office workers. I think a waved Spyderco is a great choice.

My step dad is a UPS Driver in Fort Worth and loves his Kershaw Leek. It's pretty sheeple friendly and helps him daily. I also gave him some pepper spray since he is always getting bitten by crappy little dogs. :)

I used to work for ups sorting and we were told if we had a knife on us we would be fired. The drivers might be able to though.

My UPS Driver likes Kershaw Scallions; also, has purchased Whirlwinds from me. I gave him a ATS34 Buck Rush one year for Christmas.

I'd get him either a Camillus CUDA MAXX, a CS Vaquero Grande, or a Dodo.

He said many drivers carry "those spring-loaded cutters" (don't know what he meant by that) for removing labels and tags and the like, when the need arises.

I think he's referring to the little blaze orange cutters I see the workers using in convenience stores. You deploy the tiny blade by pushing a side button, and when you release the button, it retracts automatically.

One year, I gave my letter carrier a Microtech LUDT. He carries it even though his son is a cop and bugs him about it being illegal. :D

Good one, Cobalt!:D That's funny.

I'm going to go with a waved Delica. Should be about right.

How about a Byrd Crow or Raven (if 3.5in blade is ok)? If he loses it, ok...if he doesn't, it's still a good performer.

What about a superknife. I think a folding boxcutter would probably fit the duties of a UPS carrier.

I think a waved Delica might be suitable. Or, you could go the whole hog and get him a Mini-CQC-7 Wave. That, in my opinion, would serve him quite well (and be the right combination of small enough and useful/sturdy enough).
A multitool might be nice, although I'd make sure to get one with one-hand-opening blades.

My UPS driver carries a Sheffield Razor knife. It is one of the tactical folder looking ones, from Wal-Mart. ID'd it by the pocket clip/ protruding handle, he confirmed. I purchased one for myself subsequently.
