My girlfreind wants to call upon the wisdom of bladeforums.com members and ask what knive she should buy her brother (who lives in Japan) for christmas. She wants him to carry it everyday, but it has to be less then 100 USD. I'd give her my opinion, but she thinks its "so cool" how people all respond here, so humor her please.
When I say non=knife, i mean he likes knives, but i dont really think he knows how to take care of them, or would he if he had it. I don't know this guy from adam, so your guess is as good is mine, thanks guys.

One word: Swiss Army Knife(ok, that's 3).
They are extremely useful with their selection of tools, they aren't threatening, if you get a Victorinox or Wegner they are well made and don't really need any care, and they aren't bad looking.
Hey Chris, why are you reading this? This is between me and your girlfriend :D

My sister bought our father a Delica one year, and now he carries it to work every day! That is inexpensive and a good blade. From there he can go maybe Microtech and then custom! :)

What does her brother do for a living?
Maybe you could get him something that will help him at work.
If he works on computers, then maybe a Victorinox Cyber-tool.

Good luck,
Allen.

Having been stationed in Japan I'd take great care in what type of knife you select. . . The "JP" (Japanese Police) take great offense with those who carry weapons !

I highly suggest a Kershaw Double Cross (Model 4380). . . It falls under your 100 USD price, super sharp, durable, capable of daily carry, doesn't look offensive, and is very cool !

Try one of the Richartz multiblade models. These are much better looking than Swiss Army, and innocuous enough to be nonthreatening even to police. There are two basic styles: one with nonslip dots, and one with nonslip inserts. There is also a style that comes apart into a knife and fork section. That's about as "nonweapon" as you can get. But they're stainless and relatively worry free.
Or you could get him a double edged neck knife with a skullcrusher, and turn him into one of us knife knuts overnight :D

SAK with all the bells and whistles.:)
Champ or the Traveller(w/compass and small flashlight)

I think a Victorinoc SAK or a Leatherman Micra. If he doesn't carry a knife now he might not want anything heavy. If you get the Victorinox SAK I would agree with either a Cybertool or a Super Tinker. From what I have seen the Japanese love gadgets so the Cybertool would probably go over very well. Whatever you get I would sugget that you add a Photon 2 LED light in white. Great little flashlight that is about the size of a quarter. Costs about $12 - 15.

I was faced with this dilema last Christmas and this is what I ended up doing. For those members of my family that are more gadget oriented, a Victorinox Tinker. This model is very thin, while still having six tools to toy around with. For those that liked the idea of just a knife, I bought the smaller version of the CRKT Urban Shark. This little knife has the coolest overall look, for the price range, and with AUS-6A and gray Zytel, it won't rust closed in their pockets. This is assuming my gift patrons don't know how to take care of fine knives. These two models worked for me, so I thought I'd relay this info on to you! :D

I was going to say an Outdoor Edge Paragee.

The suggestions of a SAK are also excellent. Cant go wrong with one of those. They are also almost universally accepted as "non threatening".

Victorinox Swiss Card! Great little thingy. Photon II with it would be cool as well. Card fits in a wallet. SpyderCard would be excellent as well except for the Police angle.

What he NEEDS is a Victorinox Deluxe Tinker, and maybe a Spyderco Sharpmaker to keep it's two knife-blades super-sharp.:).

Get him something he can carry on his keyring. If he's not used to having a knife in his pocket, he may not carry it with him everyday. He'll keep it on his dresser, in his car, in his briefcase, etc. But everybody carries a keyring. I suggest a Micra or similar keyring sized tool. Or, for less than $100 you can get him an engraved silver Victorinox Classic

I have to second the Victorinox Swisscard, it is a great little card, has the gadget thing going, and the Victorinox name is not one someone will associate with weapons. I bought one and my wife almost stole mine she liked it so well. Anytime my wife sees a knife she likes I try to get it. Brings her ever closer to the Dark Side.:D
This pic is from their website, and shows the tools, and different colors.
