hi there guys i would like to have your ideas of a gift knife?
My nephew just graduate to be a bush aircraft instructor!
Is there any classic knife for a bush aviator of anykind? Thanks in advance
Chris

A Bush Knife maybe? lol, sorry I couldn't resist. I don't know what makes the most sense, but I'd probably go for a compact fixed blade he can strap to a vest or his ankle. If all fails get a

one that can cut through the fuselage:)

He needs a lot more than a knife of any kind...fire extinguisher, advanced first aid equipment, emergency rations/water, an ax, tent, sleeping bag and more ad nauseam. When I used to fly my own planes (never in the bush but sometimes over uninhabited areas), I had all of these items plus at least one large sturdy fixed blade (not necessarily expensive), a smaller fixed blade and a sturdy folder. That was not counting what was in my pockets. He needs to be ready for anything and everything when flying in the bush. Hopefully his employer can steer him properly. Ask him what other bush pilots are carrying.

Exactly. This is a bit like my mother buying a bunch of stuff for a soldier headed overseas. What is he issued? What does he already have? What does he really need? What is he allowed to have in his 'unit'?

Thanks guys theres a few good knives you named that I will checked on...... im not worry about him getting all is stuff needed, its just im kinda know as the knife guy in the family so i cant help getting him a good blade, thanks to all

SOG used to or does still suggest that the Field Pup (survival knife) was used for this. I think the Seal Pup Elite would be better suited from their line. I would suggest something like the LionSteel M4, ESSE 4, (as mentioned before) or Kabar Becker BK-16. None of these are real expensive.

View attachment 960030 This is what a pilot’s survival knife looks like. This happens to be a stainless steel Camillus model, but many companies made them. Most are not stainless.

Recycled pic. I really like the Kabar Turok. Great sheath, excellent ergos, and proven steel. This is the knife I would reach for before many others I own.

I know this is for knife suggestions, but the first thing that popped into my head was a nice comfy Leatherman (maybe the Wave?). A bush pilot will inevitably also become a bush mechanic. In fact, I think that the only thing better than a Leatherman when in the middle of nowhere, is two Leathermans.

And sure, suppliment with a good, do anything fixed blade like those mentioned above.

Being a pilot myself, I can't think of a knife for him.
His situation definitely calls for a fixed IMHO.
If he wants to go more affordable, maybe a Steel Will or Ontario?
Maybe see what the Navy pilots currently carry?

How's about something he'll actually carry, like a quality pocket knife, maybe an Old Timer or Uncle Henry and a decent neck knife, like an SOG Snarl, Cold Steel Secret Edge or Mora Eldris.

Or a smaller fixed blade of some sort. A Mora or some other decent Puukko type blade.

Not sure what the intended purpose is but when my nephew was stationed in Afghanistan I sent him a TBS Grizzly. It's a combination bushcraft/survival knife. At 6mm thick it can probably cut through an armored vehicle if need be.

Congrats to him! That's a great accomplishment, and I'm sure he'd be touched to receive a knife to mark the occasion. Can you tell us where he'll be flying? And what he'll be transporting? That might generate some more suggestions from folks. All good ideas so far.

For practicality and weight, it is hard to beat a multitool. But given the tradition and north country I associate with bush flights, might be neat to consider a nice scandi, like a Helle for over $100 or a Mora Garberg for under $100. Loved the idea of the F1 offered above. That always gets high praise and it's high on my 'want' list.

Regardless, there are some outfits that will engrave something on the blade for a few bucks. I did this for my dad once, and he loved it.

Whatever you get, strop the tar out of the factory edge until it's screaming sharp. Something about opening up the box and having it sharp enough to shave with makes you (or at least me) love a knife like 10x more!
