Knife Gift Recommendation

Hello. I would like to buy a knife for my boyfriend for his birthday. I am just learning about knives and have found browsing this forum very informative.

I was hoping you could give me some gift recommendations. I am going to tell you which knives I know he has and likes.

He most recently bought himself the CRKT Centofante Tribute because he likes how elegantly simple the construction is.
He also has the Hissatsu Folder (assisted opening) from CRKT and a Spyderco Folder (serrated.)

I know he likes the Tanto by Kit Carson from CRKT and the Ultima by Michael Martinez from CRKT.

However, he said he would like to branch out to another brand and he likes variety. He would not be opposed to something with a wood or bone handle to vary his collection but I want to make sure whatever I get him is still bad-ass and useful and not just a collectible. He is also interested in getting a survival or tactical knife, maybe with a fixed blade.

I also happen to know that he thinks the Smith and Wesson military police knife is ugly. What else...He admires Navy SEALS and teaches Karate so something related to those interests could be cool.

So, if you made it through all of that and think you have an idea of what his taste might be I would appreciate any gift suggestions. I would like to stay under $175 but would love to even hear suggestions out of my price range just to fantasize about. Mainly, I want to get him a knife that someone who is into well-designed knives will be psyched about.

Thank You,
Rebsy

Rebsy,

Lets see Admires SEALS, ready to branch out to another brand, interested in a tactical knife maybe with a fixed blade.

http://www.amazon.com/SOG-Specialty...Z0O6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1328007059&sr=8-2

I like the SOG Seal Pup Elite for this gift. Its a fixed blade designed for the SEALS and carried by many of them. Best price ive found is on amazon (link above)

From the manufacturers website
"SEAL Pup Elite - Black TiNi E37T

The SEAL Pup Elite is our high performance edition to the SEAL family of products. Sometimes... we just "have to have" more horsepower, the racing suspension, and every available option including sunroof. All kidding aside- the SEAL Pup Elite is serious business and carries on the tradition of supplying the worlds elite military forces.
Features include:
Thicker steel stock (.185)
Hardcase Black TiNi blade
Newly designed longer ergonomic handle with deeper finger grooves
Racy new blade shape with longer cutting edge
Added blade spine rasp for notching, filing, and thumb placement
Injection molded glass reinforced handle scored with grip lines"

He is also interested in getting a survival or tactical knife, maybe with a fixed blade.

Look at Becker and ESEE knives for examples.

He would not be opposed to something with a wood or bone handle to vary his collection but I want to make sure whatever I get him is still bad-ass and useful and not just a collectible.

Maybe a traditional hunting knife? Bark River, Northwoods, Buck, Queen, Helle, AG Russell, or one of the fine custom makers who sell knives here at BladeForums.

So many choices. Good luck deciding!

I would recommend a Spyderco ParaMilitary2 with digicam scales. The S30V will outperform AUS8 by a good margin.

If he is into martial arts maybe try something that hasn't been around in a while, a Steven Segal Kershaw folder. Very nice all around package with sting ray skin handle inserts and it was a collaboration with a well known custom maker. Check the well known auction site, and search for any variation or Steven, Segal, Kershaw, Knife, Folder, I just came up with 4 of them when I did it.

Note: I have no knife for sale on that site or friend or relative with knife on that site nor am I deal spotting. I own said knife and thought it would make a good choice, somewhat collectible, traditional materials within build, MA themed and an awesome custom maker for the collaboration.

Since he has the CRKT Centofante Tribute, perhaps he'd also enjoy the Spyderco Centofante 3. Great slicer, good-lookin' and can be easily found online for around $60.

The Spyderco Para-Military 2 has already been mentioned, but it is a superb folder and extremely popular... and for good reason! A Para 2 can be had for around $120-ish...

He's a lucky fella. Good luck! :)

If he's looking into survival / tactical, check out the ESEE 5 or 6 or Becker BK7. Both would make fantastic gifts and will last a long time, even with being used and abused.

Great choice above! One of the Bladeforums supporting dealers, Knifeworks.com, sells those I believe, and I have had nothing but great experiences with Roger and Knifeworks.

Definitely a Spyderco or one of the Ritter blades mentioned previously would be a good idea. If he likes a well-designed knife, and his only experience so far is with CRKT, either one of those would blow him away. My favorite Spyderco is the Manix 2, although the Para 2 is a very popular knife.

If he wants a fixed blade, within your budget, you could actually get him a couple. I'd suggest a short EDC knife, like the ESEE IZULA 2, or the Becker BK11 or BK14, or the Bark River Bravo Necker 2, and the BK7 or Machax for a larger blade. Or, you could invest in something from, say, Fiddleback Forge, or one of the other makers on here, in 5160 or 1095 (both excellent and affordable steels). If he likes a nice blade, what better than a custom?

Another option, if he wants something more exotic, is a Himalayan Imports khukuri. They're within your price range, and you can get a really stunning handmade piece for him that will blow him away, if he's a fan of the curvy blade.

Fixed blade- consider the new Ka Bar Mark 1 Navy knife with the Kraton (rubber) handle.

Folder- Victorinox Farmer.

for "bad ass survival" how about a hest, fixed or folder

or the opposite, go for a nice traditional pocket knife, like the case swaybackjack or a stockman

Benchmade 710 in M390 would gives you a superb steel in a time tested design. If you want to go the wood handled route, the Mcusta Tactictility is a gorgeous and very functional folder with a number of options on the handle scales. Since he's a martial artist he may also like the Spyderco Yojimbo 2, which is well within your price range, but hard to find beause it's selling so well.

which spyderco serrated knife does he currently have?

the spyderco military or para military2 would both be excellent choices.

military is on top, para military is on the bottom:

what does your boyfriend use to sharpen his knives with? both of those knives will run you in the $100-$125 range, being that your budget is $175 you might want to consider also getting him a sharpening system.
