Egads - I find myself in a world totally unfamiliar!

I would like to get my (Harley riding/executive type/40) boyfriend a knife for Christmas. We stopped at a small leather shop once in New Hope, PA and he looked at some knives and was quite taken with them. I wish I'd paid more attention at the time, because I don't know the name of the shop or the type of knife, or anything. What sort of knife WOULD he (going by my aforementioned description of him) like? I know he said something about cool handles...like bone, or antler or something, but...beyond that, I'm just lost. Any suggestions?

Blynne

Maybe something like this? Or this?

Do you want something for his Harley Ridin' side or his Executive Type side?

How much are you willing to pay?
Since he rides a Harley, and also mentioned bone, antler, etc... it sounds like he may lean towards traditional looks.
I would suggest that, in addition to posting here, you head over to the Buck Knives forum. You won't get any more traditional than that. Also, Buck has started a project called Pete's Custom Knife shop. Ask around over there, and someone will give you the web site. Heck, here it is. Pete's Custom Knife Shop. Anyway, you can go into this site, and for a very reasonable price, in my opinion, order a custom made knife to your specifications, in as good a steel as is available, BG42. There are a variety of handle materials available, including some rather exotic selections like water buffalo horn, I think. Unfortunately, it may be a little late to get one made by Christmas. But, assuming that Y2K rolls around and the world doesn't end, I think it would make it by very shortly thereafter. And I can't imagine him not liking it.
'Course, I could be wrong. But it is a suggestion.

Be prepared to be overwhelmed with suggestions!

To help narrow it down, can you tell us what the maximum amount you're willing to spend is. I'm also assuming he'd simply be using it for everyday chores such as opening mail and boxes, junk food packages, and the like. In other words, nothing to hard core.

One knife that comes immediately to mind is the Case Copperlock. Nice classic design, bone handles, easy maintenance, not too pricey. Here's a pic of mine:

How about a Gerber Paul Hog (Harley Owners Group) knife. There are some on E-Bay right now. Get ready to dig way down deep into your pocket book!!!!!!!!!!

They are so sweet!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if I'm replying in the right way/place, but...I went to that custom knife shop...Pete's? How cool! And "made up" a nice (I think) knife...with a water buffalo handle. Now, knowing about the "world'o'knives", is that nice or tacky? I also kinda wanted to his monogram initialed on the blade? Is that...all right? Or...Just Not Done...

Bettye,
You did Great! This is your boyfriend, right?
Do you want to get married? This may do it for you. He will be the envy of all his friends. You may not know it but that knife is a Classic, and you just customized it just for him. Heck, I'll marry you, but my wife has to be Matron of Honor.

Betteye, very proper and well done on all counts. He is a lucky man.

There are a few Harly Davidson commissioned knives and lighters out there. Check out KnifeCenter, they might have something.

Isn't a Buck 110 standard biker wear?

I have that Buck 110 with asian water buffalo handles with the blade and the bolsters engraved. What a great knife! Most excellent choice for your first knife gift. He will love ya for it.

Buck has done such a great job with these kives that they are the sharpest, tightest knives you can get and they are absolutely beautiful.

My birhtday is in February in case you want to use the shop again

Well done, Blynne! Now, if I could just somehow throw some kind of hint at my wife to get her to do the same!
I went over and looked at the site after I posted it above, and the water buffalo is awesome! He will really like that, I do believe.

Where is Jim March when we need him? He is just the person to answer this one, although my suggestion would be a BladeForums Native, if one is still available. That is one very sweet knife! It is superbly made and damnably good-looking in the bargain. I was showing mine to a guy at a knife store and asked him what he thought it was worth. He guessed $150, only 50% more than actual! Hey guys, remember whan we were griping about thte price? Wow! My thanks to Mike, Spark, Sal, et al for making it possible, and my apologies for any griping I may have done.

Bettye, welcome! you realize, of course, that you just made yourself about 4100+ new best friends with such a great attitude

you did fantastic on your choice for a knife! and ask "Pete" the maker what he thinks about engraving the handle... he may have some thoughts about what would look best, and so on.

please come back and visit us again--maybe to post pictures of the final product? and certainly to let us know how your sweetie liked his present...

and don't forget: we gals deserve nice knives too. to reward yourself, why not buy yourself a nice little pocket knife? Chai Cutlery has a great selection plus lots of photos and info to help someone just starting out...may i recommend a Boye folder, or possibly a Lightweight Calypso Jr. (it's a little more than halfway down the page), or, if you can splurge, a William Henry...

don't mind me, i just won't be happy till all us women carry a pocket knife to cut our own boxes and bagels with...

good luck!

Silverwing, I'd like to get a ladies opinion.
Bettye, if your still around, two would be better. I'd like to get my wife a really nice knife, something that's definitely for her, not for me. I bought her a Spyderco Q, with New York cut through the blade. She liked it, but didn't love it, ya know what I mean?
You mentioned William Henry knives, I think they are great, I'd like a T12 for myself.
For my wife I was thinking the T09-D, Diamonds and Pearls, how can I go wrong? I don't mind spending the money on my wife, she's worth it, but if she doesn't love it, I would kind of feel foolish.
I know you don't know her, but any feedback would help. She is not a Knifenut, very feminine, still very down to earth, she does Tai Bo, likes to sweat, won't go outside without makeup, a great girl. We've been married 24 years. What else can I tell you?
Any help or feedback, is greatly appreciated.

PS, She loves the clothes I buy her, really.

PhiL:

tough one, but here's an idea you (and other befuddled spouse-types) might try:

she likes the clothes you buy her, so that's good...how about the jewelry? jewelry, being "hardware", is a bit tougher to pick out--more options, more 3D, kinda like a knife... see where i am going with this?
smile.gif

so look to her favourite jewelry for hints. (if she doesn't wear jewelry, look at the type of things she decorates your home with, same idea--gals, you can use this with your guy, too) does she like silver? wood? lots of bitty details or really clean lines? does she keep to one sort of material (only gold with no stones, or only wood knicknacks) or does she like things that combine two different ones? are her things high-tech or old fashioned? is she a small-and-delicate earring type or a big, clunky, borrowed-it-from-vampire-gerbil sort?

vampie3.gif

(hee hee, sorry, couldn't resist!)

the william henry line has so many choices that there's pretty much something for all tastes there--carbon fiber for those who like the high tech clean look, their diamonds and pearls for the pearl-and-diamond-earrings set.

this hint of choosing-knives-that-remind-you-of-her-favourite-jewelry might just work! for example, i'm a real silver-and-stones sort, and i wear a lot of my native stuff--sometimes the real simple silver, sometimes the fancy beads. looking at my knives, you find clean lines, strong colours, but not a lot of fussy stuff. i like contrasts between two materials, just like i like stones with my silver. if it is fancy, like my Benchmade 850, it's elegantly fancy, just like my beaded earrings...

as for concrete suggestions, from what you've said about her: another idea is the Boye folders. i've seen them at shows with wood and other materials used for the handles; they are great knives! beauty mixed with steel...

from your description, sounds like your wife likes "strong, but pretty"--she likes to sweat, and likes wearing makeup in public. perhaps she did not find the Q to be enough "strength" for her--too much yin, if you will, not enough yang. so a knife which balances both, like your wife, might be just the ticket...

oh, listen to me rattle on...i do love to hear myself type
wink.gif

i hope some of that prattle was at least a tiny bit helpful...take what you like, and forget the rest--and let us know what you finally picked out!

oh my...i'm SORRY...PhiL, i just realized you asked for a ladies opinion...oops.

guess i shouldn't have answered ya

go HOME, silverwing, and do your CHORES...and stay off the FORUM!!

Silverwing,
I knew I could count on you, for an insightful and articulate response. I have had good reactions to jewelry that I've given her. That WH sure seems to suit her, she's seen pictures of it, and I can sure picture her carrying it.
You, sure sound like a great gal, I didn't mean anything negative about "ladies". I'm kind of old, and that's how I think of the fairer sex.
Thanks for your response. We sure need more people like you around here, you're Terrific!
