This post might go to another forum, but let me ask about the kife grip.
Recently I read the book authored by Michel D.Janich. He introduced the Saber grip and the Filipino grip in his book and they are different from the grip I have learned at Kendo class.
Biggest differences are the place of thumb and laying the handle at the base of fingers. The grip I learned is puting the handle along the the base of the thumb and curl the thumb and index finger gently around the handle but put litte and ring fingers closely.I think this position of the handle is similar to the proper "Bow hand". This is different from the Hammer grip put the handle vertically on the palm.
They gradually concentrate the pressure of fingers, from little to thumb, when they swing the katana. This grip never prevent the snap of the wrist and less affect the trajectory(?) of the edge.So it yield more impetus and less tend to damage the edge of precious katana by unvertical impact, they said.
I don't know much about the Foil grip, but are the Saber and Filipino grip is the most prevailing way for knife technique?

The Sabre & 3/4 Sabre,(thumb is on the side of handle, not on top), are used instictivly by most people in every day use. Depending on the move, (thrust or slash), they also are used in defensive knife moves more than Filipino or Reverse grip.

Hi slices,
Thank you for the information.
I think the grip put thumb on the side of handle is appropriate for relatively long and heavy knives like saber and bowie.
Filipino grip seems to be better for the faster move of very light knives, like folders at my test.
