My BK2 is the only knife that gets used hard enough to need oil and this helped.

I was looking for a better gun oil and decided to go with S&W,since I use a Cold Steel Roach belly for food prep I'll be using a light coat of this on my BK2 to protect it.
Killing two birds with one oil.

Any knives that I use for food prep, including skinning and gutting, I use mineral oil. Mineral oil is sage for human consumption and is actually used to help alleviate constipation.

Ballistol is some of the greatest stuff on earth. Not harmful, was actually used to treat wounds during WWII. It has a ph balancing effect for my acidic hands. I use it all the time on all my stripped carbon steel blades. Plus you can get a mini can for your pack that works good, or just buy a tub of it, and make you own small container.

Ballistol.

I have had ballistol in the past.
Stupid question but, can you start a fire with it like WD-40. I keep a tiny can of wd40 in my truck. Its natural uses plus fire creation assistance score it high in my MUT (Multiple Use Test) Wondering if I could keep a little ballistol as well.

Moose, go set some ballistol on fire. thanks.

I use Hoppes and like the smell of it but it doesn't seem to perform as well as others, anyways I thought it was an interesting test.
Ballistol did very well also I'll look into it for not being toxic Moose.

he says he's the 'gun geek' if he was such a geek he would have tried Mobil 1 V Twin Synthetic 20w50... threads like this have been discussed at great length on many a gun forum...with mobil being tested in a lab against many other oils and proving to be superior...... of course its not made for guns but for motorcycles... none the less 1qt will last a lifetime at $10 no marketing hype just plain facts..

I'll try to dig up the testing data, its been a couple years.......................... sooooooooooo bare with me.......

oil wars are almost as entertaining as caliber wars..... I wonder how mineral oil, canola, and olive oil would fare in such a test.. hmmm, interesting..........................

op: btw, if you're using you knife all the time there really is no reason to even have to oil it:D

Guns/knives are two very different things and as such requirements are different. I use food grade butcher block oil (mineral oil) on my blades and Vagisil in my firearms.

I hope that finally cured your itchy trigger finger:D but I'll stick with more traditional lubes.

Since it only takes a few drops of lube to protect a firearm and even less on a knife
I wouldn't be saving a whole lot of cash by using synthetic motor oil.
Mobil 1 might be a great lubricant for moving gun parts but as far as rust protection
inside the barrel? I might just do a little test of my own instead of reading thousands
of posts on gun forums of people arguing back and forth.
S&W and Ballistol are good lubricants but what matters to me is rust proofing my BK2 and either one of those two seem to be able to do that.
Two birds,one oil.

Thanks for the info. I've been using RemOil w/ teflon for several years now & so far it works good, don't know how harmful it would be to use on a knife for food prep. ?

I own close to a hundred knives of all types and ages and have never felt the need to oil the blades on any of them. I lube the pins on the folders but thats it. I just dont let my blades rust.

I agree with you ballistol works wonders for everything.
I use it on my knives as well as my straight razors.

If you take a wet blade and put a couple of drops of ballistol on it the oil right away attracts the water and beads up into white globs that eventually harden. It's cool to see it attack the water that fast.

Also it's handy for protecting leather. Helps my work boots from drying out and cracking.

Yeah, I forgot about that, safe for leather and wood. I love the stuff, I can't believe it took me 30yrs to find it. Until then, I was a RemOil/Birchwood Casey guy. Now, all I use on guns, knives, and fishing reels, is Ballistol. And cheap, man, that stuff doesn't cost much at all.

Fluid Film. Buy it in an 8oz brush can for around $9 each, an aresol can for around $9 each, by the gallon for around $40-$50 each or by the 55 gallon barrel for around $1395. This stuff is the best rust preventative & lubricant I have ever used.

I going to try Eezox. Very thin, sinks in water, not float like oil. Many online rust tests have been done with Eezox taking first or second, beating out many brand name oils.

i spit on mine and wipe them dry. rust? what rust.
