Is there any material used in knife handles that mimics the yellowish orange look of aged ivory.

I think the closest thing would be Ivory Micarta.

I have heard a lot of makers have given up on ivory micarta because of crud in it, little dark flecks of dirt sandwitched in the layers of paper.

Sometimes you get lucky and get some older ivory micarta that tends to yellow more than the modern stuff.

The little black flecks come from buffing so if you can avoid buffing by very fine sanding the handle stays clean. The problem however is that in order to scrimshaw on micarta the surface has to be buffed to a high gloss first, but that is a whole other problem to get around.

There is a bone coloured corian but it doesn't yellow with age. The artificial ivory that is used on pistol handles is a polyester resin material, looks good but can be a bear to finish due to tiny included air bubbles.

Thanks for all the input. I found a site with some ivory micarta scales which are close to what i was looking for.
