I have my grandpa's WWII Ka-Bar. It needs some work done to the blade and a new sheath. I was thinking having something "custom" done, but haven't decided yet. Other than sentimental value is this knife worth the effort? What kind of $$ am I looking at? The blade rust free but has some small chips-nothing that can't be taken out my someone that knows what they are doing. LOL!

Welcome to bladforums!

If it were my Gramp's knife it would be worth it to me.

You might be able to get a sheath for around 20-50 and maybe less -it depends on the quality and the features you want. I would expect it to cost anywhere from 10 to 20 dollars to fix an old nicked blade of that size, but I have never used a service like that. You could always buy a sharpener and learn to sharpen yourself. It is not as hard as some people make it out to be.

outside of the fact that knife is grandads, these have some collector value. i would leave it as is & buy another knife. the costs of improvement could approach replacing as a user , a new kabar .

If it were my grandpa's ka-bar I'd keep it as is and take care of it. Put some oil on it everynow and then, pick it up and admire it. You can get yourself a kabar with heavy duty leather sheath. They also come with pretty decent edges. That's just my $.02 though.

I know leather sheaths can be found for something like 30-50 for leather and 20-40 for kydex. I couldn't say how much a new handle would cost, I'm not thinkin' cheap though. Your sharpening can be done by a few members who charge for this service, I think the memper pimpnugget sharpens knives at a very reasonable price. Look him up and ask him, he's very talented.

What he said I ran into a similar delima with a old Itahaca 12 Gauge shotgun that was given to me by my grandfather, I debated on getting it reblued but decided against it because I wanted to leave it as is the way he gave it to me and one day pass it down to my son... I would leave the blade as is and buy another KA-bar and use that one..

And, if the knife does have value as a collector, "restoring" it will probably reduce or eliminate that value. Might be worth checking on this before you do anything to the knife.
